Clay Spotted in NYC ... Working On Album?

Clay was spotted in New York City last night. Although he may be doing many different things in NYC, he did mention in his blog last week that he'd be working on his third album this week.

Report off one of the boards:

I know........
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
.....that as of last night Clay was in NYC. Someone on the Fifties thread at Get Acquainted had a friend who works at Radio City and they saw him there. Sooo, I guess he's working on the CD like he said, and maybe doing some work on Spamalot or something. Or maybe looking for a place to live........that's just me speculating, though!

Tidbits 10/20

  • Yahoo! Broadway - more publicity for Clay new role in Broadway's Spamalot:
Breaking News. Clay Aiken is going to make his Broadway debut in Spamalot! Yup, that is right folks. Clay Aiken, American Idol star, will be rockin' "the Broadway" from January 18th - May 4th, 2008. Wow! Wow! Wow! I don't even know where to begin. I am speechless. I guess I will let others do the talking for me.
  • E! Online - random mention:
The B!tch Replies: Turn off the hysterics, kid. You sound like Chris Crocker just lost his favorite Wet n Wild eyeliner during a slap-off with Clay Aiken.
  • The OFC has posted what it is calling an exclusive preview of Clay's upcoming appearance on 5th Grader ... but the clip has already been on YouTube several days and it was featured on our Tidbits post yesterday.

Clay and AI2 Rewind -- Looking at Pictures From Four Years Ago - 3rd In Series

The next AI2 Rewind show will go to Austin to audition people to be on American Idol. Surely the great state of Texas has a lot of talent just waiting to be discovered! In fact, this is where Kimberly Caldwell will get her gold ticket to Hollywood. I am thankful that Kim made the finals, because if not, I may never have watched American Idol and been introduced to Clay. Only because I found out a local girl was in the final did I even want to watch the show! Thank you Kim!!

It'll be another great show, another great walk down Memory Lane, and another fantastic narrative by Clay. Here, to remind you of Clay's time on AI2, are a few more pictures for you to enjoy:

Christmas In The Heartland Contest Rules Announced

Clay blogged a few weeks ago in search for your Christmas stories. Rules are now posted on the OFC contest page about how you can submit a Christmas story you will be asked to share at one (or more) of Clay's 2007 Christmas in the Heartland concerts.

It can be any special Christmas story or memory and must be an "elaborative narrative" between 1500 and 2000 words. We have a hard time believing how any concert-banter type story - let alone a Christmas story- can be over 1500 words... not exactly sure what Clay's intentions are here or whether this is just a typo.

Clay Featured in ABC News' UNICEF Article

Paris Hilton is going to Africa! Working with a humanitarian organization, Ms. Hilton will soon make a trip to Rwanda. ABC News published an article titled "Paris to Rwanda: Socialite Becomes Latest Star Hitched to Charity" detailing how some celebrities have used their voice to bring attentions to the issues plaguing Africa and African children.

In the article, Clay is quoted very often, about his 2005 trip to Uganda

Celebrities' association with humanitarian aid organizations is nothing new. Danny Kaye was one of the first actors to join a charitable organization when he was named a goodwill ambassador for the United Nations Children's Fund (Unicef) in 1954. The comedian paved the way for other entertainers, among them Audrey Hepburn, Sarah Jessica Parker, David Beckham and Clay Aiken.

[...]

Attention that leads to big bucks. Aiken asked fans to donate money to Unicef to help the children in Lebanon and raised more than $75,000 in 24 hours.

[...]

Aiken made the cut when he was named a Unicef ambassador in 2004. The organization approached Aiken after hearing of his involvement with his own charity, the Bubel/Aiken foundation that helps young people with special needs.

Aiken said he felt obligated to help those in need.

"One of the most important responsibilities that you have if you're answering to the public is that you try to use that position in a way that serves the people you're trying to entertain," said Aiken. "I think you have a responsibility when you realize you have kids watching you. ... You can set an example to have kids doing drugs, or you can set an example to have kids helping their communities or their world."

[...]

Celebrities sit through classes to learn about Unicef and all the various issues that threaten children's survival around the world.

"We study as much as we possibly can before we go," said Aiken. "And I study after I go, because I want to be an expert on it. I think it's a disservice to the country you're going to and the children you're trying to help if you don't know what's going on and can't speak knowledgably about your experience.'

Aiken said the preparation is necessary in order to meet with health ministers and other officials on these trips.

"It wouldn't behoove anyone if we just went in to take pictures and came back," said Aiken. "The goal of all these visits and the reason we sit through extremely long sessions sometimes is so when we come back we know what we're talking about."

[...]

Aiken didn't know what to expect during his first visit to Uganda. He walked into the minimalist community center, where he expected nobody to know his name. Suddenly, he was greeted with bows from the crowd.

"When we walked in, they kept calling me your excellency," laughed Aiken. "I think both visits we've been on there have been misconceptions about how important I am."

All joking aside, no matter how famous -- or infamous -- a celebrity is, celebrity support is essential.

[...]

"It's usually a tent somewhere. That's our standard accommodation," said Szarkowski.

Aiken and others pay their own way when they travel on behalf of Unicef. However, once they reach their destination, they don't have the need for many expenses. Most nights they're sleeping in tents on the ground.

In addition to the bare bones travel accommodations, celebrities must cope with extremely dangerous situations. In order to avoid conflict, Prendergast said every minute detail of the trip must be mapped out.

"These trips have to be planned very well to ensure maximum impact and security," said Prendergast.

[...]

"I look to Angelina Jolie as a prime example of someone who is doing an amazing job," said Aiken. "She really has a passion and she goes in and makes a point to educate herself about what's going on and that's the only way to do it."

In case you haven’t heard, Clay Aiken will join the Broadway cast of Monty Python's Spamalot on January 18, 2008. Clay will take on the role of Sir Robin, which was originally played by David Hyde Pierce. He will be with the production through May 4. The Tony Award-winning musical is playing at the Shubert Theatre (225 W. 45th St.).

  • Canada's Globe & Mail - FOX to debut "Next Great American Band" with American Idol format -
Sometimes it seems like everyone in America craves the fast-track climb to the top of the music heap. The star-making machinery of American Idol has given the world such instant pop sensations as Kelly Clarkson, Clay Aiken and Taylor Hicks. Now come the garage bands.
  • Daily Herald - another article about FOX's new show -
Loyal readers know I'm no fan of the most popular program on TV. "American Idol," in my humble opinion, has contributed to the collapse of the music industry by championing singers who use cheap melisma in place of genuine emotion while trafficking in the tired old standards of yesteryear. No authentic or even remotely innovative artist has a chance of winning "American Idol." Instead, it foists off well-meaning hacks like Clay Aiken, Fantasia Barrino and Taylor Hicks as stars.

There was an awful lot of Clay-news this week, what with me totally predicting Spamalot, him blogging, him posting, and even Clay going into chat which NOBODY bothered to tell me to get to while he was still there, by the way.

*Takes a Moment to be Moderately Pissed*

Ok, I'm over it, I think.

Anyway, apparently there were lots and lots of questions for Clay that he didn't get around to before everybody scared him off, so I'd like to take this time to try to answer some of your Clay-related questions myself.

Clay Aiken has joined the quest for the Holy Grail.

The “American Idoler” will make his Broadway debut in the Tony-winning hit musical “Monty Python’s Spamalot” on Jan. 18.

Aiken will star as Sir Robin, the comically cowardly role originated by David Hyde Pierce of “Frasier” fame. “Lovingly ripped off from” the classic Python movie, the musical riffs on beloved bits of shtick including the Knights who say Ni! and the taunting French soldiers, who, um, suffer from flatulence in our general direction.

    • Lifetime TV -
Clay Aiken has joined the growing list of “American Idol’ alumni to appear in a Broadway musical. He has been cast as Sir Robin in the Tony-winning “Monty Python’s Spamalot,” and he is scheduled to be part of the show from January 18 to May 4, 2008. The Broadway production of “Spamalot” is playing at the Shubert Theatre in New York.
  • Minneapolis St. Paul Star Tribune - Article about the American Idol spin off "The Next Great American Band":
A full episode of "The Next Great American Band" (7 p.m. today, KMSP, Ch. 9), a temporary fix for "American Idol" fans, wasn't available for review, but the clips I saw suggest that most of the competitors are pretty good. If that's true, it's a big mistake. Nothing is more gratifying in the first few weeks of a reality contest than watching would-be entertainers stink up the joint, especially with a no-nonsense judge on hand like Sheila E. More William Hung, less Clay Aiken!

  • Carolina On My Mind - Clay ready to make Broadway debut -
Be prepared to travel far in search of your particular Holy Grail. To make the most progress, you must follow through on whatever tweaks your passion. Chivalry will arouse tender feelings.

Clay Aiken's prophetic horoscope in his hometown newspaper, the News&Observer, Monday should have tipped his fandom that the search for the Holy Grail would soon lead to Broadway.

In a journal entry entitled "Blogalot," the singer Tuesday announced to his fan club that he has signed on to play Sir Robin in the Broadway hit "Spamalot" from Jan. 18 - May 4, 2008.

In the blog's P.S., Clay suggested that "Spamalot" tickets would make excellent Christmas presents:

Ladies, you can give them to your husband, and he’ll think they are a GREAT gift! He doesn’t have to know they are really for you!!!

Clay Chats With Fans About Spamalot, Christmas Tour

Clay chatted with some lucky official fanclub members last night at around 7 PM EDT about his new role in Spamalot and the upcoming Christmas tour. The full transcript is available at OKClayFans' board.

ClayAiken says to raleighaikenfan (19:22):
Melladi: How long has
he thought abou
t/known about trying out for Spamalot?

ClayAiken says to raleighaikenfan (19:27):
In addition to it being a Mike Nichols show.. its completely the opposite of what many would expect.Like I said. Its a chance to do something different and hopefully show of other aspects.

ClayAiken says to raleighaikenfan (19:28) :
Has he written any songs for the new cd?....

ClayAiken says to raleighaikenfan (19:28) :
no.. not yet

ClayAiken says to raleighaikenfan (19:30):
it si our intention to do meet and greets for the christmas tour

ClayAiken says to raleighaikenfan (19:35):
on ocassion i run into some kids had during the seven years at the YMCA. they make me feel really old!! Havent had the chance to see the students i taught in the classroom

ClayAiken says to raleighaikenfan (19:36):
Video blogs wouldn't be impossible.. but they are improbable considering i am rarely in the same place when i write

ClayAiken says to raleighaikenfan (19:38) :
Kareneh... it was less of an audition and more of a work session. I got to work with mike nichols and the associate director peter lawrence quite a bit.... but the producer, general manager, associate music director, choreographer and casting director all

ClayAiken says to raleighaikenfan (19:41):
Lexi... I ddn't write anything in the chicken soup for the soul book.. but i did speak with an author who, i believe wrote something

ClayAiken says to raleighaikenfan (19:43):
Blush.. i have no idea if there will be a summer tour.. You know most artists only tour once every year or two. Many go three years between tours. We have been out on the road consistently for up to three tours a year over the past years. i am sure we will

ClayAiken says to raleighaikenfan (19:44):
I mean.. i cant say much more than that until the episode airs. (regardless of how much you already know) I think its obvious when you see the show what i would have done differently in hindsight

ClayAiken says to raleighaikenfan (19:45):
karma4clay..... i rarely make any plans for this mop on my head. I don't believe that there are any requirements for my hair re: the show. i am pretty sure they will provide a wig if they deem a wig necessary

ClayAiken says to raleighaikenfan (19:48) :
No Duane Reade card... but, unlike a year ago.. iam now very familiar with duane reade

ClayAiken says to raleighaikenfan (19:48) :
when canadian venues and concert promoters call us and ask, we will try

ClayAiken says to raleighaikenfan (19:51):
i'll wear what the show producrs give me.. i think there are some variation on tights in the pipeline!

ClayAiken says to raleighaikenfan (19:52):
its hard to go everywhere in a short three to four week span. we cant hit every part of the country when iwe travel on a bus. the last time we tried to do that for Christmas we had to start at Halloween! so, we decide to keep them all within traveling ista

So now Clay Aiken is coming to Broadway in Spamalot and suddenly - who cares about "stunt" casting? I'm so thrilled I'm jumping out of my skin. What a brilliant move for Clay to choose Spamalot as the place to make his Broadway debut. And how wonderful that Mike Nichols and Eric Idle chose him. I saw this show with the original cast and my husband saw it once more. Now we're all set with tickets on my birthday to see it again. This is not your typical BIG VOICED musical. If Clay had done Les Miz or even RENT it wouldn't be such a surprise.

The Spamalot News is Spreading 'Alot'....To 'Alot' of Sites That Is

News of Clay joining Spamalot is spreading fast; above: Clay featured at People Magazine's website.

Clay Aiken has found his Holy Grail: Broadway.

The popular 2003 American Idol runner-up, 28, will join the cast of the original New York production of the Tony-winning King Arthur send-up Monty Python's Spamalot on Jan. 18, the Associated Press reports.

Clay Spotted At Ruben's Concert in Raleigh

Clay was spotted at Ruben Studdard's concert at the North Carolina State Fair this past Sunday. He was seen backstage wearing jeans and a hoodie.

geekette at the CH reports:

I'm just back from the fair - the fireworks alone were worth the cost of admission!

It was a very last minute decision to go (lost a few husband points, though) and I took my sister with me. We had a good time running around the fairgrounds trying to see and eat everything in an hour, then we got tix for Ruben's concert. I felt like I had a scarlet C on my forehead, though. We really stood out.

The woman at the ticket booth offered that he was selling quite well and they were pleased. The floor wasn't quite full, but our side seats were closer than those in the back of the floor anyway.

Anyone who's been to "Dort Narina" knows that the acoustics SUCK! and the lighting was awful. Much of the time Ruben was in complete darkness. There was a spotlight right below me and I was very tempted to see if I could turn it on, but I knew I'd also be tempted to swing it just a bit to the left to see if that really was Clay over there. You know how you can recognize a familiar person even if you can't really see them? Gestalt. I knew it was him even before he whipped out that iPhone. It's a little freaky to think I "know" him that well.

Ruben did mention meeting Clay in LA, and how this red-headed guy was downstairs with some "fiiiine women", so he asked if he could join them. Then he imitated Clay's "Hey, how are ya" and said they exchanged numbers and have been tight ever since. Very nice. I just wish I could have heard him sing better! Did I mention the horrid acoustics?

The first couple songs I didn't recognize, but he did sing some familiar ones and some covers. We left after about an hour - it just got wearing. I'm not sure what elements Clay said he "stole" from Ruben for his shows, it was mostly singing, with very little chatter. Ruben did lean over and touch hands and toss his towel out in the audience. There were some happy fans down in front!

The music is by Eric Idle and John DuPrez.

Clay Aiken, who has sold more than 6 million albums; co-authored a best-selling book; and, played six sold-out concert tours, said "I really couldn't have asked for a more wonderful group of people to work with. Let’s not lie, the chance to work with legendary creative minds like Mike Nichols and Eric Idle is, on its own, a reason to jump at this opportunity. But, that's not all. The producers and creative folks I have had the chance to meet and work with so far have been unbelievably welcoming and wonderful. They've really made me feel at home already, and I haven't even started yet!"

Director Mike Nichols said: "Clay Aiken is amazing beyond that glorious voice. Turns out he is an excellent comic actor and a master of character. People will be surprised by his wide ranging talent, since the first impression is of great country charm and a singer to remember. This guy is not only a star, he is a lot more. We are lucky to get him for SPAMALOT."

SPAMALOT author and original Python Eric Idle commented: "This is great news. I have been a Clay Aiken fan ever since I took my daughter to see him live on the second season of American Idol and she held up a big sign of his name. Maybe now it should read 'American Idle.'"

Winning more awards than any other show in the 2005 Broadway Season, including the Tony Award for Best Musical and the Grammy Award for Best Cast Recording, SPAMALOT has set box office records since opening on Broadway to critical acclaim in March, 2005 at the flagship Shubert Theatre.

Tidbits 10/15

  • Some members of the Clay nation found a "new" review of Merry Christmas with Love over at Christmasreviews.com:
Now Aiken has released Merry Christmas With Love, a lovely, heartfelt holiday card to his millions of adoring fans. The release definitely plays to Aiken's strengths; this is no frivolous pop froth. Aiken sings these Christmas classics with the gusto of a seasoned holiday music icon, somewhat reminiscent of Sinatra or Como. Aiken is often compared with Harry Connick, Jr., and it's a fair comparison. The arrangements are relatively straightforward, and Aiken's stylings are old-fashioned, and I mean that in the nicest possible way. Although Aiken's clean voice is accompanied by considerable engineering magic and background vocals, the production is largely restrained and tasteful. No annoying gimmicks clutter the fine music here.

Merry Christmas With Love contains a dozen tracks, a smart blend of the old and new. As you might expect, the best-loved holiday chestnuts are here. The three lesser-known contemporary numbers are the title track, Celine Dion's (co-author) "Don't Save It All For Christmas Day," and the wonderful "Mary Did You Know?" (a personal favorite of mine!). Interestingly, there was apparently some ongoing debate regarding the order of selections on the CD. The album's back reflects one listing with the caution "See Label For Sequence," and the CD's label in fact shows the correct line-up ("Winter Wonderland" and "Sleigh Ride" are switched). The liner notes, which contain considerable information about each track's production and some nifty photos of Aiken, present the songs in a third (and entirely different) order. None of this affects the recording's quality, of course, but it is fascinating to consider the strategies involved when stringing holiday tunes together into an entire album.
  • Broadway World - article about a project Clay's musical conductor, Jesse Vargas, is involved in:
The CD was arranged and musically directed by Jesse Vargas (Bare; Clay Aiken tour) and was produced by Alan and Vargas at Track 9 studios, New York City.
  • Tech Digest - calculating the success of an album using the "Moby" equation -
There's several factors within the formula, such as 'the sacredness of the song involved in the shilling', with John Lennon's 'Imagine' at number 10, and 'Disco Duck' at number one, and 'the artist's underground, nonconformist or punk origins', showing the Rolling Stones at number 10, and American Idol-darling, Clay Aiken, at number one.
  • Tallahassee Democrat - pageant queen dances to TITN -
Keister was interviewed by a panel of judges about her current and future life goals and knowledge of local, statewide, national and international current events. She performed a lyrical jazz dance during the talent portion of the competition to Clay Aiken's “This is the Night.”

Clay fans certainly have our rituals, from the way we purchase tickets to the things we do to prepare for a concert to the fact that (as Clay once told an audience)we spend “25 hours a day” on the message boards.

Best Essay - "I Know Where the Hand Has Been" by Cincy15

In response to Kelly Ripa’s recent comment that she doesn’t know where
Clay’s Hand has been, I may be able to address that issue and hopefully
eliminate any of her fears. You see, I am a student of that Hand. I’ve made
it my point to learn where it has been in the past, where it may be at any
given time of the day, month or year and to speculate where it may be going
from this point forward. No, I am not a stalker; just a fan.

I have learned that from the time Clay was a baby, that Hand (like the Hands
of most children) has been held firmly by his mother. I am sure there were
times as a youngster when he may have felt he was giving her as much in
comfort as she was in guiding him since a single mother often only has the
touch of her child to remind her of love. From early on, the Hand was
reminded to join with the other Hand as he knelt in prayer. Faith is an
important part of the Hand’s life, you see.

Best Story - "I Saw A Woman Fall In Love With Clay Aiken Last Night" by yaknelle
I saw a woman fall in love with Clay Aiken last night and she didn't even know it.

She was sitting in front of me and beside her husband. I was seated in a seat that seemed to be the point for all lost audience members to stop and wonder where their seats were, so they stopped and asked me. The man in front of me said that I should get a job at Pala. I laughed and said the commute from Chicago might kill me.

Clayboarder Has Dinner with Faye Parker

The Clayboard's yea4clay dined with Faye Parker last night in Raleigh, as part of an auction she won earlier this year. She shared her experience with us in a posting to the Clayboard:

Last night I finally got to have my dinner with Faye. I won a Wake Co. Literacy Council auction, and the prize was dinner with Faye. My sister went as my guest and Faye brought her best friend. Faye is so sweet and easy to talk to. Since I'm a big talker the whole evening was like four old friends who hadn't seen each other in a while catching up on all the news. We gabbed nonstop and laughed ourselves silly over lots of topics. I asked her, "How much are we allowed to talk about Clay?" :-) She said, "As much as you like, but you probably know more about him than I do!" It was a wonderful evening, and one that I'll never forget! It's obvious where Clay gets his warmth and personality from.

OK, now that I've got your attention...HA! No, seriously, Faye really didn't say anything we don't already know. I think she polices what she shares pretty carefully. And I'm sure she has to. I know she wouldn't want anything she said to compromise Clay's privacy. I debated whether to share this or not, but I don't think Faye or Clay would have any problem with this. About halfway through dinner, her iPhone rang and she answered it. She said, "Hi... what am I doing right now? I'm having dinner with two of your fans! Wait a minute, son, it's so loud in here, I can't hear you." With that, she left the table to take HIS call outside. I said to her friend, "OH. MY. GOSH. That was Clay on the phone!!!" She laughed and agreed. I said, " I can't believe he called right during our dinner!!" WOW!! Faye came back a few minutes later, and, of course, I fangirlied all over the place about the call. Faye laughed and said, "Oh, he just calls when he wants something!" Then she said, "You might be happy to know that I told him about you, and he knows your name!" Believe me, that just MADE my day! I still have to pinch myself to realize that I can now say that I know Faye Parker! AND CLAY KNOWS MY NAME!! Does life get any better than this?

4 Years
It's hard to believe that it's been 4 years to the day since we celebrated the release of Clay's debut album, Measure of a Man. If you missed J4Clay's article which takes a look back at the release, click here.
  • Luxist - Clay sold his condo in Charlotte, this blog reports: "Clay Aiken has sold his condominium unit in Charlotte, N.C. for just $71,000."
  • Toronto Star - "Star Magazine" on Clay's apparent weight gang. The media is so pathetic: "Clay Aiken has always somewhat resembled leftover oatmeal. Having gained 50 pounds simply makes him look like a lot of leftover oatmeal."
  • Wichita Eagle publishes some reader comments on Clay's sexuality:
Clay Aiken is not gay. And if he were, there is nothing wrong with that. Jerry Seinfeld has spoken.

So what if Clay Aiken is gay? And hooray for Central Christian Church, which has proven the Christian adage "Hate the sin, not the sinner."

  • Taking A Moment - celebrating the 4th birthday of MOAM -
I'd like to propose a cyber-toast to Clay in honor of the fourth anniversary of Measure of a Man. Clay, in the face of upheaval, detours, mandates, untruths, tragedies and the blackhearted, you've proven yourself beyond doubt to be honorable, kind and wise. In the comfort of friends, love, good fortune, good health, generosity, support and the best that mankind has to offer you have been gracious, humble and giving.

Four years. 2,103,840 minutes. Measure of a Man.
