Well, it might not star Clay Aiken, or even Harry Connick Jr. (who toplined the cast in a recent Broadway revival), but George Abbott's 1950s musical The Pajama Game — with songs by Richard Adler and Jerry Ross — is a fun outing that's more than just a relic of its Mad-Men era.

KTVZ.com, Oregon's "online news leader" has posted an article saying that "Bend Metro Park and Recreation District was one of the recipients of $10,000 toward enhancing its inclusive programs."

In addition, the article says:

Using this grant money, Bend Metro Park and Recreation District will be able to:

• Expand inclusion staff
• Receive a program model and Foundation training from Bubel/Aiken
• Continue to work toward achieving the goal of Let's ALL Play, which is to assist child and youth organizations in moving toward full inclusion.

Bubel Aiken Foundation Announces 2008 Grant Recipients

The Bubel Aiken Foundation is doling out more than half a million dollars in funding support to non-profit organizations across America, as it does every year. The funding is being supplied as part of the BAF's Let's ALL Play program, which expanded to support 30 camps this year. The BAF posted this news release on their website. A full list of organizations receiving support can be found here.

The Bubel/Aiken Foundation Announces 2008 Grant Recipients

The Bubel/Aiken Foundation is thrilled to announce over $500,000 in grants to support programs nationwide as part of the Foundation’s Let’s ALL Play program.

This is an exciting development in the Foundation’s goal to expand Let’s ALL Play. The Foundation will support over 30 recreational programs in 2008. Programs receive a program model and Foundation training in addition to grant funding. Because of the Foundation’s support, children across the country will participate in inclusive programs for the first time.

Let's ALL Play brings an inclusive recreational experience to children with disabilities by giving them the same experience as children without. Children come together to participate in activities such as swimming, arts and crafts, community service, and physical fitness. The Foundation is also excited to announce grant partnerships with Best Buddies International, The Dancing Wheels Company and School, and LA’s BEST After School Enrichment Program.

The goal of Let’s ALL Play is to assist child and youth organizations in moving toward full inclusion. In 2004, the inclusive recreational experience for children with and without disabilities was instituted by the Foundation in collaboration with several summer camp programs run by the YMCA. Through the pilot program phase, the Foundation worked with professionals in education, recreation, and camp administration to develop the Let’s ALL Play model. Recreational sites now have a tested, successful, comprehensive program model supported through the Foundation’s training module.

The Bubel/Aiken Foundation looks to create communities where ALL children can learn, live, and play together. With over 30 programs in 2008 implementing inclusive programs, the Foundation will take a big step toward that goal. It is because of the continued support of dedicated volunteers and the assistance of new supporters that the Foundation was able to make this possible.

“We’re very excited about the opportunities these grants will bring to so many children. The Bubel/Aiken Foundation is proud to support the efforts of organizations across the country as they move toward full inclusion,” said Clay Aiken.

Palm Beach Post Interview With Clay Highlights Golf Tournament

An interview in the Palm Beach Post entitled SIX QUESTIONS FOR CLAY AIKEN, by Leslie Gray Street, not only highlights Monday's "Golfing For Inclusion" Tournament, but also includes some great mentions of the fans by Clay.

When asked about the tournament Clay says:

My dream is that (the foundation) can exist, should exist, without me needing to carry it. We want (the fund-raiser) to be lucrative and at the same time, to appeal to people who definitely would not be the demographic that would show up for my Christmas tour.

Golf would definitely appeal to a group that would often (be dedicated) to philanthropy but probably not vote for American Idol.
Clay is also asked about the "Let All Play Together" program, which is a program where summer camps are inclusive of children with disabilities.

When asked about whether he would play golf, Clay, in his typical self-deprecating humor, said,
"I don't think that I could successfully do it. We'll do some sort of clinic that shows you what to do. I could show you what not to do. (If I played) we could be there all day long waiting for me."
In addition, Clay mentions the dedication of his fans, as well as his upcoming roles in Spamalot. Clay will play Sir Robin, as well as three or four minor roles. As for his fans, Clay sings their praises:
I often say that the coolest thing about (the fans) is not just that they come to shows, but that they do support things that are important to me, like UNICEF and causes that I support.
He goes on to tell some of the many things the fans do, including organizing t-ball teams to spread inclusion and organizing groups for Wrapping For Inclusion.

To read this entire interview, check it out at The Palm Beach Post. Its a must read!

--- --- ---

Update 4:51 PM: The Palm Beach Post has expanded today's coverage of the TBAF Golfing For Inclusion in a series of blogs from the Post's Leslie Gray Streeter:
  • Palm Beach Post - "Clay Aiken's Golf Tournament: Beginning golfers for inclusion" -
As I write this, Clay Aiken is standing behind perusing the yogurt and fruit table at Mirasol Country Club, and I am trying not to look behind me because stalking is bad.

Clay's here for Golfing For Inclusion, the first-ever charity golf tournament to support the Bubel-Aiken Foundation and its efforts to make sure disabled kids have the facilities to be included in summer camp and recreational activities. Golf pro Wayne Player, who has a really great South African accent, is here to handle the golf clinic and other golfy stuff, because Clay admits he can't play golf at all.
  • Palm Beach Post - "Clay Aiken's Golf Tournment, Part 2: It's the Clay and Wayne Show!" -
Former US Open and British Open golfer Wayne Player, son of legend Gary Player, may not have had the career his dad did. But during this morning's golf clinic at Mirasol's "Golfing For Inclusion," he's proven to not only have a heck of a swing, but to be an energetic, theatrical teacher that might make him the Professor Harold Hill of golf ("He's the golfing man, and he gives golfing lessons to the swells in town!")

For about 30 minutes, Wayne gave some pointers on golf, some ruminations on growing up in the light of his father, and made Clay Aiken his second banana. He also demonstrated how to properly aim a swing by not knocking off the head of our good friend and Clay fan Pam Bassett, who he had stand nervously behind him as he swung.

"Do we have her check yet?" Clay joked, as Pam covered her eyes while Wayne swung and hit the ball, as promised, really far and nowhere near Pam's head. Everyone was impressed and Pam was happy to still have a head.

Clay told me a few weeks ago that he's not a good golfer, and Wayne himself joked this morning that he's probably a better singer than Clay is a golfer. But after twisting Clay around during his demonstration like a Stretch Armstrong doll, Wayne says he may have been wrong. I won't bore you with all the golf terms, because I don't know a dang thing about it, but basically Clay hasn't been good at golf because, he says, he's "duck-footed."
  • Palm Beach Post - "Clay Aiken's Golf Tournment, Part 3: You say 'Clay,' they say 'Clayton'" -
I've hung out with so-called Claymates before, but the "Golfing For Inclusion" tournament here at Mirasol marks the first time I've ever met actual friends and families of Mr. Clay Aiken.

Or should I say, Clayton. Because they do.

The golf tournament's been going well, I guess - I've met several participants who are just big golfers and supporters of charity like realtor Susan Kohout, who organizes volunteers at big golf events, and some who are big Clay fans, like our friend Pam, and Chicago's own Michelle Manson, who's gotten involved in the Bubel-Aiken foundation and volunteered for their inclusive summer camp.

"Sure, he can sing. He could always sing," she said. "Everybody has a job. But Clayton is the foundation. He loves this, and I love it. Hopefully, this will give these children an opportunity to go to camp and one day be able to touch our lives."

Clayboard TBAF Camp for Clay Challenge Looking for Your Support

Each year, the Clayboard holds a fundraiser to benefit TBAF in honor of Clay's birthday. This year, the Clayboard Team for Inclusion Beta Alpha Chapter has a special goal in mind for Clay's birthday. We all know that TBAF is aiming for 100 camps in 2008, and we have heard Clay say that ONE camp is about $10,000.

So this year, the Clayboard would like to reach the goal of raising enough money to fund one TBAF Camp...a total of $10,000. The deadline donations to the"Clayboard TBAF Camp for Clay Challenge" is noon Eastern Time on Thursday, Nov. 29. All donations, big or small, that could help us to reach the goal of a TBAF Camp would be greatly appreciated.

You do NOT have to be a member of the Clayboard Team for Inclusion to take part. All you need to do is make your online donation at the TBAF site and when filling out the donation form, just type "Clayboard Team for Inclusion" in the box marked "Beta Alpha Chapter."

After making your online donation, please be sure to PM or email Mamarose10 at The Clayboard (email: bozpip@adelphia.net) with your screenname and amount of donation so we can add your donation to the tally, and make sure your name is included on the card that will be forwarded to TBAF and Clay.

We hope everyone will join us in this challenge and help us in reaching this very special goal of a TBAF Camp for Clay's Birthday.

"eBay Auction Remembering Inclusion" - Approved BAF Fundraiser Raising Funds For BAF's 100 Camps

There are so many great fundraisers that have been going on for a while now. A lot of the Beta Alpha groups are raising funds for The Bubel Aiken Foundation's "Let All Play" program by selling watches, necklaces, keychains, and much more so that 100 camps can become a reality in 2008.

The Beta Alpha Group, "Aiken Breakin Broads Remembering Inclusion" began an approved BAF fundraiser just for that purpose about a week ago. The fundraiser, "Ebay Auction Remembering Inclusion" is raising money by auctioning items on EBay that belong to the group's members. A store which has been named "Aiken Breakin Remembering Inclusion" has been set up at Ebay so that all items being auctioned are in one location. The auction is set up exactly like any auction on Ebay is. Already, the group has raised close to $500 in a week by selling items such as those in the picture above, including jewelry, games, toys, books, DVD's, Christmas decorations, and household items. More items are being added to the store at an almost daily basis, so you should "come over and come often" to the store and check out what is still open for auction and what new items have been added since you last looked. The prices are great, and the final price is determined by your bidding. 100% of the proceeds, less Ebay and Paypal fees, will go to The Bubel Aiken Foundation.

The link below will take you to the "Aiken Breakin Remembering Inclusion" Store. Save it to your favorite places so you can "Come Browse, Bid, and Buy for BAF"!

http://stores.ebay.com/Aiken-Breakin-Remembering-Inclusion

Here is all the information that you should need to know about this fundraiser.

If you find you need more information, send an email to abbinclusion@yahoo.com. Come help us raise money for a wonderful cause. We would love to double our $500 to at least $1000 before the store closes come mid-October. The Store will be open until October 13 with lots of great deals for you to buy!

This and all other approved Bubel Aiken Foundation fundraisers can be found at the BAF Approved Fundraiser page.

Let's ALL Play: A Message From TBAF's Aron Hall

The TBAF's Aron Hall is asking for your help in spreading word about the TBAF's summer camp program, now called "Let's ALL Play".

The Bubel Aiken Foundation is aiming for a goal to set up and/or support 100 summer camps across America in 2008. With Clay's winnings on "Are You Smarter Than A 5th Grader" and YOUR support, the foundation is on track to turning the dreams of thousands of kids into reality.

Thank you for responding and wanting to get the word out about Let's ALL Play.

Let's start at the beginning:

To find camps in your area, go to www.acacamps.org and click "Find a Camp." You can do a zip code search and see camps within your area. Each camp listed will have some sort of profile. The camps we have worked with so far have been fairly traditional day camps although we would not be opposed to a residential camp wanting to try our program. We are also not limited to working with YMCA camps. Make sure to check

Find the contact person for the camp and make a call or email.

In your initial contact, express that you are a volunteer of TBAF and that we have a fully-developed model program that will help them move to include more children in your community. Clarify that you are not asking for a new camp, but rather you are asking them to supplement their already existing quality program so that they can better serve children with special needs. Finding local stats about disabilities may help them realize the need. Try to set up a time to meet face-to-face or to drop off information.

REMEMBER the word "push" and not "fight." Don't go into this with the mentality that you are going to "fight" anybody to make them inclusive. The reaction way more than not will be avoidance and you will get nowhere. Program directors are extremely busy. Let them know you are there to help and that we are, too. Give them the information that TBAF is willing to come train their staff as part of the grant award. Depending on your willingness, tell them you will help them write up the grant, find volunteers, or anything to help make this process easier. Be passionate, but have contagious passion that makes people want to join you, not obnoxious passion that makes people want to avoid you like the plague.

If you get the opportunity to pass on information, go to our website to gather information. Several helpful pages to visit would be:
  • "Who We Are" under About.
  • "Let's ALL Play" under Grants & Programs.
  • "Grant Guidelines" under Grants & Programs.
  • "Grant Process" under Grants & Programs.
  • The grant application under Grants & Programs.
  • "100 Camps for 2008" under News & Events
  • "Camp IMPACT in SC promotes Let's ALL Play" under News & Events
  • "Clay Aiken to Expand Camps" under News & Events
You can just print this information directly from the web or copy and paste it into your own document.

You being there will be proof that there is community support behind this local initiative. However, if you can under gird that support with other people, companies, or other organizations who may be willing to back it with finances and manpower, your case will be heard much more clearly. If you do WFI, let them know about what that is. Perhaps you can set up a time at their program-if they have year-round ones-in order to familiarize their clientele with inclusion and TBAF.

The grant deadline is October 31, so obviously this is an issue that requires immediate attention.

As you can see, you can make this simple or complicated. The one thing that will sell this more than anything is your "buy-in." Familiarize yourself with the process before you try to communicate it.

I so appreciate your willingness to get out there and make a true difference in your community.

Thank you!

Press Release Out About Clay's Appearance on "Are You Smarter Than a 5th Grader"

A Newswire press release has been issued concerning Clay's appearance on "Are You Smarter Than a 5th Grader".

According to the article entitled Multi-platinum Recording Artist Clay Aiken Slated for Celebrity Edition of Are You Smarter Than A 5th Grader?:

Aiken will be playing to raise money for TBAF which will receive a
minimum $25,000 for Clay's appearance. But Aiken plans on earning much more for his foundation. The Foundation earns money for each question Clay answers correctly. Should he correctly answer all 11 questions, the Foundation will earn one million dollars.
Jerry Aiken, TBAF's executive director, said in the article that they are excited about the opportunity to raise funds for BAF's Let's All Play camps, but they are also happy for the opportunity to "gain exposure for our goals of full inclusion." Clay's appearance on the hit show, he said, will be great for the foundation whether he wins the million or not.

Clay will be taping his show on August 28. The date that the show will be televised has not been determined yet.

Bubel Aiken Foundation: 100 Camps in 2008

The Bubel Aiken Foundation has laid out an exciting plan for 2008 - they will be expanding their "Let's ALL Play" program to support 100 summer recreational programs across the country. The BAF sent this email to its supporters outlining their plan:

Coming soon on our website-www.bubelaiken.org:

100 Camps for 2008
TBAF Excited about Expansion of Let's ALL Play Program

The Bubel/Aiken Foundation (TBAF) is excited to step forward to expand its
Let's ALL Play Program. For the summer camp season of 2008, TBAF seeks to
support 100 recreational programs in implementing inclusive camps by
providing a program model, funding, and training. Programs will participate
in a grant process to receive funding. TBAF is looking for quality programs
like the ones they have worked with to develop the Let's ALL Play model. To
check out the grant process, please visit our website under Grants

In order to provide the financial backing to these programs, TBAF is looking
to its current volunteer and support base for innovative ideas that will
increase awareness and help raise the necessary funding. The Foundation
will participate in efforts to expand awareness beyond our donor base to
people that are not aware of the message of inclusion and the programs of
TBAF. Corporate sponsors are also being sought as a key element of support
and visibility for inclusion.

Dedicated volunteers and supporters are already busy at work with various
projects to support the Let's ALL Play initiative. In the true grassroots
spirit, volunteers are seeking to raise awareness and money through can
recycling, scrapbooking, social gatherings, and selling items such as
watches, lanyards, key chains, and stuffed animals. To see all the
fundraising possibilities, see Approved Fundraisers on our website.

TBAF will work to update supporters through email newsletters. The first
newsletter release is targeted for August 15. If you would like to receive
the newsletter, register through Connect on the home page. If you would
like to learn more about becoming a Voices of Beta Alpha volunteer, click on
Voices of Beta Alpha from the home page.

Let ALL Play helps to bring an inclusive recreational experience to children
with disabilities. It gives children with developmental disabilities the
same experience as those without. Children with disabilities and their peers
who are typically developing come together to participate in recreational
activities such as swimming, arts and crafts, community service, physical
fitness and more.

The goal of Let's ALL Play is to assist organizations that serve children
nationwide in moving toward full inclusion. In 2004, the inclusive
recreational experience for children with and without disabilities was
instituted by the Foundation in collaboration with the summer camp programs
run by the YMCA of Greater Kansas City; the West Cabarrus YMCA in Concord,
NC; and the A.E. Finley YMCA in Raleigh, NC. The Foundation has also worked
to expand age reach with a preschool pilot program at the Hobart YMCA in
Indiana. Through the pilot program phase, TBAF worked with professionals in
education, recreation, and camp administration to develop a model that
worked. Recreational sites now have as a resource tested, successful,
comprehensive program model supported through TBAF's training module.

TBAF looks to create communities where ALL children can learn, live, and
play together. With 100 camps in 2008 implementing Let's ALL Play, TBAF
will take a big step toward that goal. It is with the continued support of
dedicated volunteers and the assistance of new supporters TBAF will make
this possible. Many thanks!
