J4Clay Review - Frisco, Houston, and Tulsa

Can it be? Can my three concerts really already be over? Why does the waiting seem to take forever, and the actual concerts just fly by in a matter of what seems like minutes? Thank goodness for great memories and lots of clack from some of the best clack gatherers that there are!

I can summarize all three concerts in one sentence. They could not have been better and for me did not disappoint! Seeing Clay in person again after all these months lifted my spirits and had me flying in the clouds! What is it about hearing his voice for the first time, off stage, and then watching him stroll out on stage, that just sends me soaring? I was absolutely giddy, like a kid again. I had chills running up and down my spine and could not wipe the huge, wide, silly grin off my face. He does that to me. His songs fill my heart and soul to overflowing. The many looks on his face just melt my heart, making room for that voice to fill it again. There's no good way to explain what these yearly concerts do to and for me. I'm trying, but I'm afraid I am failing.

I pretty much told all of you about the Frisco concert the day after it was over right here in Clay's Daily Double. You can read that article again by clicking on the preceding link. But I will add this...there were many, many people there at the Pizza Hut Stadium waiting for the fireworks who got to hear Clay sing. I don't know how many were there just to hear Clay, but no matter, there were certainly some who heard him for the first time. I hope there will be people who will go out and buy ATDW to hear more of Clay....My preference is for Clay's smaller, intimate concerts at indoor venues. Having a shorter, outdoor concert in a big stadium makes the concert not as intimate. Its like fitting Gone With The Wind into half an hour. An hour of Clay was not enough, but because of the fireworks and soccer game, its all we could get there. I was thankful to know that I had two more concerts coming up! But Clay did all he could with the hour he had. He sounded wonderful, the limited banter was funny as always, and just seeing 3-D Clay set my heart on fire!!

Now, Houston is my hometown, or at least I live just southwest of Houston. So I have been excited about this concert ever since I heard he was coming back to Houston! Coming back to Houston!!! I didn't think he ever would and yet here he was in the flesh, breathing my same Houston air (hope it didn't bring on any allergies for you Clay!).

Lots of exciting plans have been going on for a couple of months here in Houston. I was blessed to be able to coordinate the Houston pre-party at Biraporettis with the help of many of my friends and others who gave their time and donated items for the silent auction and prize drawing. We had about 140 people at the party and raised over $1,500 for The Bubel Aiken Foundation. There are so many good things about parties and fundraising...you get to meet so many new Clay fans and you get to help raise funds for BAF. It can't get much better than that!

The concert at Jones Hall with the Houston Symphony couldn't have been better. Clay said that the Symphony was the best he had ever sang with. I thought they both sounded awesome together! Tonight, we got two hours of song, banter, and snark from one of the greatest entertainers of our time! The two medleys were even more enjoyable in a smaller setting, and Clay sang his heart out. Especially wonderful was "Lover All Alone". This song should be heard by all. This song comes from Clay's heart because he wrote it. On the one hand, I am thrilled to hear a song that Clay wrote. On the other hand, it brings tears to my eyes everytime to know he wrote these words about having so much love in his heart and yet being alone. If this is an indication of what can flow from his heart to paper, he definitely needs to be writing more songs.

If the concert was not sold out, it almost was. Just looking up from my seat to the back of the floor seats, and up to the mezzenaine and balcony, it looked as though it was full to bursting. I was so thankful to have a larger crowd this time than when he came to Houston in 2004. Between the great advertising, a terrific party, and a full house, I trust that Clay could tell he was loved and welcome in Houston! I hope he could feel that love!

After the concert, fans waited outside Jones Hall in hopes that Clay would come outside and greet the fans. They were not disappointed. Jerome and Clay did come outside and shook hands with all the fans. Unfortunately this writer was at Biraporettis gathering up all of our party gear and missed Clay.

Tulsa was another great concert. Clay, in my opinion, seemed more relaxed and animated in Tulsa. He had been concerned about the song medley he would be performing, and it seems that by the time he got to Tulsa, he realized the fans loved the medleys and so was able to give it his all and just break loose and perform with all he had! Once again, every song was sung to perfection and his banter had us in stitches. There is only one complaint from me...too many people felt as though they could just call out to Clay and say anything they wanted during the concert. This got old real quick. The crowd grew tired of this quickly, and even Clay seemed to have had enough toward the end and finally began ignoring the people. Hopefully this will not happen at his other concerts. Clay knows how to lead the bantering, and even though some in the crowd were too vocal, he turned lemons into lemonade and had us falling out of our seats with laughter!

Of course, Clay told us just a little about being "beaten up by a girl". Most of us weren't aware of the airplane story then. But it was still funny and made us extremely curious as to what had happened. Clay is wonderful at taking whatever happens that day and turning it into a hilarious bantering session during his concerts. Song, banter, gorgeous guy...what else could we ask for?

Once again, after the concert, a crowd gathered outside the theater hoping for Clay to come outside and greet everyone. This time the crowd was huge and formed a big circle around the parking lot and I was able to be there. Some of us wondered if Clay really would come out to shake this many hands. But Clay does his best not to disappoint his fans. He and Jerome came outside and went all the way around the circle, shaking hands, touching hands, thanking us for coming. One 16-year-old girl was beyond excited about touching Clay's hand and called a friend to gush about it. Does Clay realize that just the touch of his hand excites some and soothes others? He brings so much joy to so many people.

There are so many other things I could talk about that took place during the few days of my concerts, but this has gotten quite long already. These memories will always be in my heart. Being with old friends, making new friends, and sharing just a little time with Clay as he entertains us in style makes life so much more worthwhile and joyful. For everyone who still has a concert(s) to go to, be prepared to have the time of your life. I still have 2 more to go to myself, and I am already counting down the days!

Houston Symphony Program

Even though the Houston concert has come and gone, here's a nice scan from the Houston Symphony program courtesy the CB's kleewolf. Gotta love that stare Clay is giving... looks like the page is going to burst into flames... THUD.

And in case you've forgotten (shame on you!), we have the 2007 An Evening with Clay Aiken tour covered from A to Z at our tour blog.

Houston Meet & Greet Recap

The CB's angelcat4jc posted an awesome recap of her meet and greet experience with Clay on Friday night in Houston:

Wow!

Just got back to my sister's in Southwest Houston after we went to Birraporetti's for an after concert dessert. (Well, a better dessert would have been seeing Clay there at the restaurant, but he probably went to the hotel to sleep before flying up to Tulsa tomorrow unless he took a red-eye flight tonite)

Ok, here goes. I hope I remember details. It may be a long one, so bear with me.

We had to be outside of Will Call between 5:30-5:45pm. We waited, took pics of us under the Clay banner at Jones Hall, we waited, we sweated, we waited. Finally, around 6:10? maybe. We showed our id's to Mary when she came out and then we went through the door by Will Call to a backstage sitting area that was right off the lobby. Mary told us about how they were doing the pictures different and the set up of the M&G, just like Frisco.

I took a pic of the room, I'll have to post those later. There was a couch and 4 elegant chairs (the kind of chairs that you would see in a museum display or very formal living room). Mary told us to have a seat. I was the 3rd person in line and I sat on the right side of the couch. The other winners sat in the chairs and one sat on the left side of the couch. Mary told us to get out the item we wanted Clay to sign and that we didn't need to use our cameras. They gave us bottled water and we sat and chatted about different things and our plans of how we are going to approach/talk to Clay. We were all giggly. Nice group of fans.

After waiting, and chatting, and waiting, and chatting, and taking pics before Clay came in, and other people coming in and passing through to the lobby, and waiting (it was probably only about 10 minutes, but seemed like forever), Jerome came in and gave a short speech about don't squeeze him too tight. He didn't say anything about not touching or anything like that.

Then Jerome left and we waited, and waited, and waited. It was maybe 6:30? when Mary comes in and she sits in between me and the other fan on the couch and said, "Clay can come in now". She was going to tease him about where he was going to sit. But he didn't come in right away, so she got up and said for him to come in. Jamie was there, too as well as an armed police/security guy. What did they think we were going to do? Kidnap him? ha ha Jamie took the pictures with Clay's camera (or whoever's it was-Clay had to show her how to take the picture or something, so I am assuming it was his)

So Clay comes in, we are sitting in a semi-circle-2 chairs on each side of the couch. He says "Hi or Hey or How are ya". I'm not sure if he said, "Hi, I'm Clay". Maybe. He was wearing a green polo shirt with the fifty2thirty logo on the upper left chest. His jeans were like the ones he wore in Frisco, and he was wearing the sandals he wore in Frisco.

He starts going around the semi-circle shaking our hands and asking our names. He says to me, "Haven't I met you before?" OMG, I couldn't figure out what to say!! I think I said, "No" and he moved on to the next person. He then came to the couch and sat between me and the other fan on the couch! Just like Mary did earlier. OMG, I kept looking at his profile and his shoulders and how he is really a big guy!!

He had lots of stubble and his hair was brown with some highlights. I really didn't see any red in it. I glanced down while he was jabbering to look at his feet and toes and then looked at my feet next to his. My gosh, he DOES have long feet and long toes!!

Okay, I'll get to the conversation.

Let's see. He talked about how nice Jones Hall is and the acoustics are so much better. He found out that the ceiling can be lowered to take away the top balcony for a more intimate venue. He was fascinated by that. He asked us where we were from and if we brought any family with us. He would call on us to answer, almost like a mini-classroom. He had control of the conversation most of the time. We really didn't get to ask questions that much. Oh, he talked about the rainy weather and I think I asked him if he drove down and how long it took me to drive from Dallas (I think I said that-jeez, the mind is going!). He said he flew down.

Oh, one thing. When he talked to each individual person, he looks you straight in the eyes. Beautiful!! :thud :

I may be skipping some more of the conversation, it's hard to remember some of it.

Then he started autographing. He would carry on a conversation with each person as he was signing their item. I had him sign my LTS. It was the edition from the Christian store. It has a little different cover. He recognized it and said that one has a little bit of a different cover and was sold at the Christian stores. He opened it right to the page I had marked with the flap and he said, "You knew where I always sign the book, don'tcha?" (with a little snark in his voice). While he was signing mine, I told him I was a Special Ed. teacher and he said, "Oh, really!" He sounded very interested and asked me what kind of students I had. I said I teach severely disabled students. He said, "oh, like Life Skills" (and he said something else, but I can't remember). I told him I was moving from elementary to high school this coming year. He said, "That's a big jump, what made you decide to do that?" I told him because it was closer to where I lived (I had moved in the middle of the school year). He also asked me how long I've been teaching Special Ed. (21 years). He said, "wow, that's great" (or something like that). This is all the while he was signing my book.

He wrote in my book: (oh, he asks each one of us to spell our name out, no matter if he knows how to spell it, because he said some people spell their names differently.)
Debbie, It was nice to meet you! Thank you for what you do! Clay Aiken

When he was finished with the autographing, he was getting up to get his picture taken with each one of us (individual, no group pic) He posed differently with each one of us. One of the fans said she wanted the prom pose. He started posing and then started going off on a tangent and said that the girl he went to prom with was a girl who, later on I think, took off her shirt in traffic or something like that (when he was a senior). The prom pic everyone has seen with the blonde-haired girl was after he had already graduated.

He had such a nice smile for everyone's picture. When I posed with him, I don't think I looked directly into the camera. I kinda got distracted. I don't even remember my arm around him or his arm around me, but the ONE THING I will never forget was the feel of his stubble/scruffy beard next to my cheek!:thud He just put his cheek next to mine and then Jamie took the picture. I hope it turned out ok. I haven't received mine yet. Probably tomorrow.

When all the pictures were done, I made a point to give him the gift bag of goodies I brought for him. The first thing out of his mouth was "Is there any food in here?" He was so funny. I knew I should have bought some Krispy Kremes or something! They would have been stale Krispy Kremes since I would have had to buy them on Thursday on my way down to Houston because I've heard there aren't any KK stores in Houston. I gave him a learning Spanish kids' version book, a t-shirt that says "Property of Texas" with the Texas flag on it with a yellow rose wrapped in it. He didn't open the gift, but saw the yellow rose sticking out. He then said, "Oh, Does this mean I need to sing-The stars at night are big and bright..."? Then he asked if any other performer sings that when they come here (meaning Jones Hall or Houston or Texas, not sure) Someone said, yes, they do. Then Clay said, then I don't need to do it if everyone else does it, do I? And we said, Of course you do!! Ha

Then he said thanks and they were trying to rush him out the door and it was almost like he wanted to stay longer and chat. We wanted him to stay longer, too. But he had a show to do. I think he left about 6:55. The show was supposed to start at 7:30, so he had to get going. Mary, I think, escorted us back out and as soon as we walked out the door (right near the entrance to the theatre by the Will Call), some fans came up to some of us and knew right away where we had been. (It must have been the continuous grins on our faces!

Well, Clay DID include a little of the Deep In The Heart of Texas ditty at the concert. And what a concert it was! It didnt start until about 7:50. Clay said he thought it didn't start until 8. With about a 15 minute intermission, it was over by 10pm. So about a little under two hours. Great!!

Wow, that was long. I hope I remembered everything!!

ETA: I knew I forgot something!

When he first sat down next to me, I tried to take a whiff without getting too close. Jerome was right there watching as well as the cop. I swear he must have had Burberry cologne on. I have some of that and the smell was very familiar to me. (of course, I was in Dillard's today and walked past the men's department-LOVE to go through that way just to get a whiff of the men's fragrances, and the leather men's shoes. LOL

And he REALLY puts you at ease. I was nervous and my heart was beating fast up until the time he actually comes in. Then it was so much easier to talk to him. Like I said, whatever I was going to ask him flew out the window since Clay was the one who controlled the conversation.

CDD Exclusive: Stay Tuned For First Hand Clack From Frisco, Houston, and Tulsa...

Hello fellow Clay fans. This is your CDD reporter, j4clay. I just returned from Clay's first concert in Frisco, and an absolutely wonderful concert it was! I can't tell you when I've been so excited for a concert to begin! I ended up on the first row down on the field on the far left side. Of course, Clay was on the right side and didn't make it over to the left side during the concert. Thankfully I will be sitting on the right side of the venue for my remaining concerts!

Having a concert in a stadium is a much different experience than having one in a smaller venue such as is in Merrillville or will be in Jones Hall in Houston. I prefer the smaller venues. They are much more cozy and intimate. I enjoyed Clay's songs very much, even the medleys, which some people did not like according to what I have read on some of the boards. I thought they were fun and refreshing. A step away from the same ol' same ol'. Who but our Clay would think to sing a medley of television theme songs nad include the audience in the "Guess which show" part of the medley? I love it! What a great walk down memory lane, and who better to take that walk with but Clay!

As for the medley of Madonna/Michael Jackson/Justin Timberlake/etc. songs, I am not a fan of any of those singers. I didn't even know what most of the songs were since I had never heard them before. But, I knew from the very beginning that this was going to be a snarky take on those songs and singers. And I thought it was pretty funny! I mean, what else could it be but snark when Clay sings a song about a sexy tractor??!!

The only things I didn't like about the show were out of Clay's control. I wasn't crazy about the venue. Even being on the first row, I felt as though I was a million miles away from the stage. Clay was high up there on the stage and standing there for an hour was not real comfortable for me. But that's my problem and no one else's. I also didn't like the fact that the cameraman on the stage kept blocking my view!! Sheesh!! And the big guy who reminded me of Biff in Back to The Future and who decided to come stand right in front of me and take pictures of Clay, well, I didn't know whether to hate the fact that he kept blocking my view or be thrilled that a guy was really into the concert! I hated that the show was so short and that there was very little banter, but that was not in Clay's hands. It was like taking 2-hour movie and trying to reduce it to an hour. You just can't do that with a Clay concert. Talk about being between a soft rock and a hard place; that's where he was by being between a soccer game and a fireworks show on July 4.

But I loved the songs from ATDW and love the medleys, and I loved the little bit of banter that he did. And I loved hearing him start the first song off stage and the anticipation of waiting for him to finally come on stage! And then there he was!! And I was in heaven for an hour. I'm looking forward to a longer show in Houston with more bantering where Clay can really shine!

I wish I had time to write more right here and now, but I am preparing for the Houston pre-concert dinner and party at Biraporettis on Friday night, then off to watch Clay perform another splendid concert with the Houston Symphony, and then after that a long drive with my fellow travelers to Tulsa for our last concert (until Cary and Ashville!!).

When I return from our long, exciting weekend, I will give you a play by play of the first three concerts of the tour. Stay tuned for more starting Monday, July 9. Meanwhile, enjoy the few good pictures I got from Frisco. I just have to get me a better camera so I can produce better clack!!

Houston Media Interviews Clay

Above: From March 27, 2007's Houston Chronicle

The CB's kleewolf says that Clay is supposedly scheduled for an interview on the radio station sometime this week. There will probably be Clay interviews in Thursday's editions of the Houston Chronicle and Houston Press. Clay arrives in Houston with his An Evening with Clay Aiken tour on Friday.
Clay has already done interviews with both the Houston Press and the
Houston Chronicle. Aiken's mgmt is supposed to schedule an interview time
with Sunny, but we have not heard word on if this has actually taken place
yet.

The interview will probably be in the Preview section
of the Chronicle this Thursday as well as another interview in the Houston
Press on Thursday.

Tidbits 6/7

Clay on the homepage of the Houston Symphony. Clay performs with the symphony in Houston on July 6. The concert is also listed at the website for the George R. Brown Convention Center... but they have their date wrong!

  • Daily Herald - Al Gore & Clay Aiken share the same "runner-up" status-
More than 1,100 fans, some of whom wait for more than eight hours, wind through the aisles of the Borders State Street store in Chicago. They can hardly believe their good fortune to be in the presence of Al Gore.

Several employees speculate that the Gore crowd probably surpasses the horde that gathered for “American Idol” star Clay Aiken (another famous runner-up).

  • Nothing here today

Tidbits 3/31

  • The Desert Sun - tickets to Clay's Pala, CA concert are now on sale.
  • Bella Online - columnist's friend is a fan of Clay Aiken ...
And she’s not. She likes music. She has CDs. She just doesn’t spend as much time as I do in music departments and on Amazon.com. However, our friendship works well – and occasionally there is cake! We also go to concerts together. Let’s see, there’s been Clay Aiken, Blue Man Group—later this year we will see Clay Aiken again, and Genesis in September.
  • About.com has a small piece about the panic attacks Clay says he used to have. About.com has a full story on Clay's story here.
Clay Aiken, pop singer and former American Idol contestant, began experiencing panic attacks after the death of his stepfather. The attacks increased during Aiken's quick rise to fame, particularly when he had to make a public appearance. After trying a number of medications, Aiken has found Paxil to be helpful in managing the attacks. Read more about Clay Aiken and Panic Disorder.
  • Atlanta Journal Constitution - American Idol fashion notes - "Clay Aiken's prominent ears were camouflaged with a new hairstyle by "American Idol" hairstylist Dean Banowetz, who is often credited with the singer's phoenix-like rise from the ashes of the second season."
  • Houston Press doesn't get why Clay is having a concert at the Houston Symphony... perhaps the responses say it best: "So what if Clay Aiken does not write for the power of an orchestra? It does not stop him from sounding beautiful singing with it. Here are some videos from his last tour. Judge for yourself."
Note, the Symphony was speaking about being Clay Aiken’s back-up band. Is the Symphony really trying to tell me that Clay’s the same level of musical genius as Elvis Costello? And when did Clay Aiken write specifically for the power of a full orchestra? Hell, when did Clay Aiken write specifically for the power of an acoustic guitar? And, as an attorney, I think that, if Elvis Costello were to decide to sue for defamation, the Houston Symphony would be relegated to being his backing band.

  • Chexxxy's - The Clay Aiken train is coming ... Summer Tour 2007.
  • GFTCSA reminds us that TODAY is the last day to donate to The Bubel Aiken Foundation via Six Degrees.
  • There Was A Man - run to get those Clay Aiken iTunes podcasts... (not so) hot off the "press"!
I can barely comprehend this, but I do believe the ClayNation is falling down on the job. We have just yesterday discovered interview podcasts that are dated...ummm...Dec 11, 2006. Now that is a little embarrassing.

In part one, he discusses "Here You Come Again". Dolly Parton was a great favorite of his mom's, so he grew up with her songs. He wanted to sing on AI during country week, but Michael Orland and Debra Byrd talked him out of it because they felt it had too much of a Broadway vibe. Something Simon Cowell kept harping on with him. He tells of how the song came to be an the album, and how it got changed to more ballad-like.

In part two, he discusses "Broken Wings". His mother almost entered him for Star Search when he was eleven, and he was going to sing "Broken Wings". Seventeen years later, he finally gets to record it. Clay explains how he came up with the ethereal version on his album.

In part three, Clay talks about the original songs on his album and how he came to choose them. "Lonely More More" Jaymes Foster, his executive producer wanted on the album because Clay helped write it. "Eveything I Have" was a favorite of all the females in Clay's life, "A Thousand Days" was a song that considered for his original song album. "These Open Arms" is Clay's favorite perhaps due to these poignant lyrics.

In part four, he talks about blending his singing career with his work with children with disabilites, and his passion for he cause of inclusion.

In part five, he talks about UNICEF, how he came to be an ambassador, and his work with the organization.

Per the Official Fan Club public information, Clay will be performing at Houston's beautiful Jones Hall on Friday evening, July 6, the day before his Dallas concert.
