Orlando's "Because You Loved Me" - One More Time

So I went to YouTube today and searched for "Clay Aiken - Orlando". The first thing that came up was what I wanted to watch..."Because You Loved Me". I was there for that song...the last time sung at the last concert of this amazing tour. I wanted to watch it again and see and feel the special relationship between Clay and his fans. That relationship is personified in that Orlando song. The smiles on his face as he looks around and sees everyone waving the lightsticks, the emotion in his voice and in his eyes. It left me with an indescribable feeling as I watched it. Every smile on his face soared right into my heart. I found myself smiling, then my smile melting into a puddle of tears, then back into a smile again. Every time I saw a light stick in the audience, it made me proud to be a part of the best group of fans in the world. It made me proud to be a fan of someone as very special as Clay is.

So I wanted to share this YouTube video of "Because You Loved Me" with all of you to watch one more time. Or two or ten or, well, that's up to you. Its worth watching many times over.

My Summary of the Orlando Concert

Once again I’ve put off writing up my review of one of my tour concerts long enough. I reviewed Cary, but still haven’t done Ashville. But I think I’ll skip Ashville and go on to the last show of the tour, Orlando.

This is the first year I have been to both the first and the last shows of a tour. Now this is an awesome thing to be able to do. You get to see first hand what he is going to sing/do during the tour, not hear it online. Then, you get to see what goes on in the closing show, any practical jokes, all the emotion and tears. This year there weren’t any practical jokes, but there were plenty of emotions and tears to go around.

I was excited to be going to the Hard Rock Live Theater to see Clay. Especially since it was right outside of Universal Studios. Even without going to Universal, there is still a lighthearted, party atmosphere that is so much fun. A friend and I ate at the Hard Rock Café and then she headed off to her meet and greet. That’s when I got a picture with Jerome. Now I knew Jerome was tall, but standing next to Jerome for a picture made me realize just how tall. I look like I’m down on my knees!!

After the picture I headed over to Margaritaville to be with some other Clay friends. There’s nothing like sharing time with some of the best friends in the world. It’s still all about Clay…going to the concerts, enjoying clack, helping with his foundation…but it’s become about as much about the dear friends I’ve made as him. Of course, my thanks go to him for making it possible to make so many friends and share these concerts with them.

It was now time to head over to the Hard Rock Live to take our seats to see Clay. The marquee at the front of the theater blinked the various artists who would be performing there, including "Clay Aiken"...."August 19". It took me several tries to snap my camera just at the right time to catch both signs!

Little did we know that we would have to turn in our cameras and then later pay $3.00 to get our own cameras back. What is wrong with this picture? I was afraid that they would not be allowing pictures since my tickets said, “No cameras”, but I wasn’t prepared for having to do this. $3.00 to get my own camera back?? The lines were long. Thankfully a friend of mine who was already in line took my camera and checked it with hers. The concert started late because of the long lines.

Our seats were up in the balcony, but on the far right end right next to the stage. We were at a table for four and 4 of our other friends were up above us in the high back chairs. This is the first time I’ve been in the balcony for a Clay concert, but I must say, these were excellent seats! And the binoculars I bought gave me a great close-up view of that gorgeous face and green eyes! We also had servers at our tables. We could buy drinks and food if we wanted. I settled for a diet coke.

When the show started, I already had a sinking feeling in my stomach. I know I shouldn’t, but seeing Angela and Quiana come out waving, and knowing this would be the last time we would see them all for a while, well, it is like saying goodbye to good friends. And then when Clay walks out on the stage singing, “Here You Come Again”, it really starts to sink in. The show was fantastic as always. There seemed to be a lot of emotion in their voices tonight. Angela and Quiana were on fire singing their songs. I believe they hate to say goodbye as much as we do.

The song "When I See You Smile" was fun tonight. Everyone brought yellow smiley face lights to wave as Clay sang this song. And, it couldn't have been planned better. Right before he sang the song, Clay said something like, "Everyone needs to have a smile on their faces", something close to that. And when he began singing, up went the smiley faces swaying to the music! I think he was quite surprised and touched by this. He never knows what his fans are gonna do.

I believe that the TV Show Medley and Classics Medley were the best I had ever seen. Before the Classics Medley, a lady named Regina yelled down at him about singing Invisible and Bridge Over Troubled Waters and that started a long banter with her. Regina was sitting right in front of my table, so we were able to see straight on into Clay’s face as he talked with her (and thank you for binoculars!). He was hilarious. He’s a natural at coming up with the craziest things to say and do on the spur of the moment like that. And he was absolutely into all the dances during the medley. You can tell he loves doing these medleys. And I love watching him have such a great time! What an entertainer!

Somewhere during the show, Clay asked if anyone had a sharpie. Someone on the 1st or 2nd row threw one straight across the stage for him! No eyes were put out thankfully! Then Jerome brought more out. Clay, Quianna, and Angela signed the stools they had been sitting on for the whole tour; Jesse and Sean will also sign them. These stools will be auctioned off later on, two for BAF and one for UNICEF. I can say this, I looked at the stools with my binoculars. The biggest signature by far is Clay's! If I could afford one of the stools, I'd buy one for sure! Start saving your pennies right now!!

The last song, "Because You Love Me", has a lot of meaning at every show. But this last show seemed to hold even more emotions for it. There were tears in Clay’s eyes I believe when he sang it. He really meant those words, especially on the last night I believe, making certain the fans knew just how much they meant to him with the words he said before singing the song. And it seemed extra special this time when the fans waved their light sticks to the beat of the music. I was so proud to be a part of that. Maybe it also was special because there were still fans that had light sticks. The venue took up bunches of them as the fans entered the theater, and a man came by and told us to put ours in our purses or they would be taken up. How could we not have our light stick tribute to Clay? And on the last night? Thankfully enough fans still had theirs to make a beautiful tribute to Clay.

When the show was over, we all gathered outside in front of the venue and formed a long line for Clay to greet us and touch our hands. This has become quite a tradition. Clay has to go quickly through the line, saying ‘Thank you for coming…thank you very much” as he grabs hand after hand in the line. But he does it because he loves the fans. He does not want to miss a night of doing this for us. And we are forever grateful for that. Venue after venue has been amazed at the loyalty of the fans and at how Clay is willing to do this. Our relationship with Clay is one of a kind.

The tour was over much too soon for me, but aren’t they always? Another 3 months and the Christmas tour will be upon us. All I know to say very sincerely is this, “Thank you Clay for the most amazing tours anyone could ever put on. I wouldn’t miss them for the world!”

Great Video By Jojoct of Clay Walking The Orlando Bus Line; Plus Bus Montage Treat

As we all know, its become quite a tradition for Clay to come out to the bus line and shake/touch as many hands as possible. The number of people in this line has been up to 1000, I believe. In Ashville, the line wrapped completely around a huge field, maybe longer. And yet Clay never misses a beat when he goes out to thank the fans and shake hands with them.

Jojoct took a great video in Orlando of Clay going down the whole line of fans thanking them. I was in that line somewhere...its anyone's guess where. We were all, of course, thrilled. He never slows down, never stops showing the fans love and appreciation.

Here, from YouTube, is that video of Jojoct's:

Also, for your enjoyment, is a busline montage by Dreamlarge found at YouTube. This about says it all:

Tidbits 8/21

  • Lycos 50 - Clay moves up 2 spots to #14
  • Orlando Sentinel - complaining about Hard Rock Orlando and how they treated Clay:
Second, Hard Rock Live. I covered the Clay Aiken concert for the Sentinel on Sunday night. I didn't mention this in the review, but it was quite distracting when the Hard Rock started breaking down the bar during one of Aiken's quieter numbers, a song he wrote himself. My seatmates and I were turning around in our seats to see what the ruckus was. Poor Clay's on stage pouring out his heart about being alone without love, and all I can hear is the dishwasher starting and ice being dumped!
  • San Jose Mercury News - article about a local singer prepping for a big show -
At 6 feet 3 inches, Ryan's a tall, dapper man who looks 10 years younger than his 29 years. With blue eyes, baby-smooth skin and Clay Aiken hair -- his term -- he's quite the looker.
  • The Inquirer (Philippines) - Kathy Griffin ...
But some of the most gut-busting are those that the redhead delivers (in her packed performances or in the show’s interspersed booth commentary), about more popular celebrities like Tyra Banks, Sharon Stone, Clay Aiken and Whitney Houston, among a gaggle of others.
  • Knox News ... uh... not sure what to make of this; but Donald Trump shouldn't be uttered in the same breath as Clay Aiken, if you ask me:
Mind you, I have absolutely *zero* interest in just about any version of "The Apprentice," but I am intrigued by the idea of the upcoming celebrity version, coming in early 2008. New York tabs are reporting that The Donald is trying to nab Paris Hilton and Britney Spears -- which would get me to watch in a heartbreat.

Here's who I'd like to see:

Ann B. Davis ("The Brady Bunch"), Lucas Grabeel ("High School Musical"), Kathy Griffin, Paris Hilton, Britney Spears, Lindsey Lohan, Steve-O, Masi Oki, P Diddy, Clay Aiken, Peyton Manning and Dakota Fanning.
  • Cinema Blend - is American Idol on the way out?
After the backlash of season six, the question now seems to be whether or not the show will be outlived by the stars- Clarkson, Clay Aiken, Carrie Underwood, Chris Daughtry, and hopefully Jordin Sparks- it created.
  • Buddy TV - "So You Think You Can Dance" winners face "uncertain future" -
American Idol breeds stars, So You Think You Can Dance does not. The reason is simple: pop singers are viable commodities, dancers are not. Idol has given us Kelly Clarkson, Katharine McPhee, Clay Aiken and Carrie Underwood. No So You Think You Can Dance winner will ever sniff the success of any of those singers. Is this the way is should be? Could it be different? Can FOX do anything about it?

Orlando Sentinel: "the class clown got to be the star"

The Orlando Sentinel has published their review of Clay's concert at the Hard Rock Orlando last night. Another good review... (again, the version posted below is a snippet)

Clay Aiken performs Sunday at Hard Rock Live.

Clay Aiken performed "Baby's Got Back," accompanied by an orchestra Sunday night at Orlando's Hard Rock Live. Oh, he performed a spirited rendition of the theme to Welcome Back Kotter, too.

Got your attention?

The show, the final stop of Aiken's current tour, was full of surprises -- most of them surreal. I really never thought I would see hip-hoppy "O.P.P" mixed with Kenny Chesney's "She Thinks my Tractor's Sexy" in a medley backed by violins and cellos. Strangely enough, the more goofy things got, the more the show clicked.

His nonsensical banter with powerhouse backing singers Angela Fisher and Quiana Parlor -- as well as a steady flow of conversation with audience members -- can make it seem to newbies that they've crashed a private party.

"There aren't many faces in the front row I don't recognize," Aiken teased, "because they're the crazy ones."

And indeed he did know many of the audience members by name, giving them shoutouts or just calling into the crowd to find out where some of the regulars were sitting. Bob and Linda got special recognition for seeing 121 concerts in four years. These fans, called Claymates, mean business.

The night was well-stocked with cover songs, which make up the bulk of Aiken's latest album, A Thousand Different Ways. Some suited him better than others -- the soaring "Without You" (most recently a hit for Mariah Carey) showcased his tremendous upper range. But he owes Dolly Parton an apology for his slowed-down "Here You Come Again" that sucked the bouncy life out of the song. "Measure of a Man" and "These Open Arms" were other strong numbers that let his vocal ability shine.

What with the TV songs, the singalongs, the teasing chitchat, the overall effect was of a middle-school sleepover -- a really big sleepover where the class clown got to be the star.

Tidbits 8/20

MusicNashville.com has a nice selection of new photos from Clay's Atlanta concert...
  • Miami Herald on the AI auditions in Miami -
''The song tells a story and I've been practicing three hours a day. I know the notes I need to hit.'' Her favorite Idol? ``Clay Aiken. I might lose some friends for that!''
  • Raleigh News Observer - random Clay mention in political article -
On his blog, Guillory says he hopes to try some real names soon: "Hopefully some Democrat will step up to the plate soon and we can end this exercise. Otherwise, we may have to resort, as one person suggested, to testing Clay Aiken against Elizabeth Dole."
  • Kitsap Sun - Chris Daughtry article ...
Davis is, of course, is the head of RCA Records and one of music's legendary record executives. He's had huge success in signing other "Idol" winners, including Kelly Clarkson, Clay Aiken and Fantasia Burrino.
  • Chicago Tribune - "High School Musical 2" - minute by minute ... "Minute 47: For some reason, Zac Efron in a suit and tie reminds me of Clay Aiken."

  • Carolina On My Mind - final 4 shows leave lasting memories
Throughout the Florida 4-fer, Clay Aiken & Company were greeted by enthusiasm and appreciation from media, symphony musicians, and fans old and new, orchestrating a memorable finale to the Summer Symphony Tour 07.

America's Own...Prince of Thieves - Do You Really Want to Know How To Quit This Man?

Today, in CDD's Tidbits Section, we have an article that from the Orlando Sentinel entitled "Need a fix to stop the Achin' for Aiken?". It is an ad for his upcoming tour performance in Orlando on August 19.

But the sentence that caught my eye is this, "Oh, who are we kidding? We wish we knew how to quit you, Clay." I thought to myself, "Now how many fans could we ask that question to and have them honestly be able to say, 'Yes, I sure do wish I knew how to quit Clay.'" C'mon now...some of us may wish we could quit smoking. In my case, I wish I could figure out how to quit chocolate!! I even sometimes wish I would quit drinking so many soft drinks...sort of. But, quit Clay Aiken? Get real, not on your life, the thought never crossed my mind nor will it! Let me see a show of hands for how many of you have ever thought about quitting Clay Aiken....Yep, just what I thought...a big fat zero!!

And for those of you who in the very back empty dusty corners of your mind have maybe let that thought speed through your mind, read CorieLuvzClay's wonderful essay entitled "America's Own...Prince of Thieves", which is about that ne'er to be forgotten performance on American Idol 5. I'll bet after reading it, that empty dusty corner will remain forevermore just that...empty.

America's Own...Prince of Thieves

The oval stage doors presented with swirls of purple color lit from within, they parted to reveal back-up lights of purple, red and orange…and then the true revelation emerged…he strutted…composedly, deliberately, looking like The Lord of the Manor, Lord of the Kingdom, like he owned the Kodak Theatre and American Idol in it’s entirety. Casually walking down the steps and onto the stage exuding bold determination, a fearlessness and a confidence abundant with a sense of credence in what he was, what he is yet to become and what he most assuredly is right now!! With aplomb and a vital inner-strength Clay Aiken took the American Idol Finale stage and brought the audience, gasping and cheering non-stop throughout his performance up on their feet and into an unforgettable frenzy!!! Clay was sterling with stunning good looks and his stellar voice!

The look on Clay’s face is almost indescribable; it held a fusion of magic, mystique, whimsy and an air of all-knowing…all at the same time. What was that look, what did it say?

Last night, in a matter of two + minutes Clay accomplished so many things…no matter what he changes on the outside, the inside is always gracious, admirable, compassionate and chivalrous…last night Clay showed the world how to treat someone who is different. He was kindly and generous with the so-called “Aiken wannabe”…and with the exception of Michael’s flamboyant actions and reactions; Clay was looking into the mirror of a long ago young man…skinny, wearing unflattering glasses & a striped shirt…knowing that the judges were having some fun at his expense. Together, side by side on that stage, they conjured up an uncanny “Before & After” visage. What irony that it was on the American Idol stage, during an American Idol finale for other contestants that Clay made the loudest, clearest most memorable statement without uttering one single word…”that is where I was and this is where I am.” I am the buzz of the evening, I am the interest of the evening, and I am the American Idol.

Once upon a time he was my Pied Piper, he is now my Robin Hood, The Prince of Thieves…for within those two + minutes Clay managed to steal the stage, the show and the hearts of not only the audience on hand, but of millions of people around the world…two hundred million viewers world wide saw for the first time possibly, what we fans have seen and known from day one. But Clay wasn’t finished with his thieving, for he stole whatever pieces of our hearts remained after the first ravaging three years ago and every assault upon our hearts since that time. Clay leaves his fans in a most delicious state of emotional disarray and chaos!! AND make no mistake we happily, adoringly keep coming back for more!!

Still, though, that look…so puzzling…What was that look, what did it say?

He walked out onto that stage and at first was almost unrecognizable, it’s funny how the Ugly Duckling comes to mind, the story of rejection and scorn and in this case, a gathering along the way of liars and story tellers, vile individuals who would delight in nothing better then to see a promising, golden career come crashing to the ground. But, what stood before us, for all the world to see, was a most magnificent specimen of the most gorgeous Swan to ever grace our eyes and set our senses reeling.

Our Swan appeared with darkened hair layered and styled in Beatle fashion. Long bangs teased his eyelids, even the darkened lashes fringing beautiful jade colored eyes got caught at times. Clay looked dashing in a spiffy suit appearing refreshed and rejuvenated. He looked sleek, slick and every bit The Hunk. Clay oozed seduction, he looked sultry and provocative…his body language screamed sex symbol and the Thuds of ClayMates could be heard around the country!

So, what did this new metamorphosis reveal? Something we already knew all along, Clay most definitely has the IT factor…he always has and he always will, no matter what he dresses it in. And that look, when he first stepped onto the stage, what did it say? It said, “I am Clay Aiken and I have arrived!”
