Tidbits 7/29

  • North County Times - American Idol 7 auditions kick off - "Some of the show's well-known alumni are Clay Aiken, Kelly Clarkson, Josh Gracin, Jennifer Hudson and Carrie Underwood."
  • Greenville Online - Asheville, NC's Biltmore Estates getting set for sold out Clay Aiken concert -
The concert schedule features country singer Kenny Rogers, performing Friday; new-wave dance-rock band the B-52s, playing Saturday; singer-songwriter Chris Isaak, who performs Aug. 10; and popster Clay Aiken, performing with the Asheville Symphony on Aug. 11.
  • Carolina On My Mind - Clay gives New York and New Jersey fans a real treat ... Newark concert:
Accompanied by the New Jersey Symphony, Clay Aiken & Co. wowed a very enthusiastic audience at the New Jersey Performing Arts Center Saturday night with passionate, soulful, and entertaining vocals, as well as personable humor and charm interwoven throughout the two-act show.

Clay even added a tumbling segment to the Newark show as he jumped off the stage for some audience assistance on the song "The Way You Make Me Feel." Hopping back onstage proved to be troublesome, but the crowd loved his belly-flopping antics clamoring back up the five feet.
  • There Was A Man - Clay makes a stop in Michigan... photos and recaps.
Clay's tour had a stop in Sterling Heights, MI on July 23rd at the Freedom Hill Amphitheatre. The Sterling Heights concert was a visual feast for all--attendees, and online fans who got to view some excellent pictures and video. Clay wore his the stunning royal blue shirt/lowrider jeans outfit(with a black jacket that fortunately came off) of the People photoshoot. He is filling it out a bit better these days, but as someone once texted him after the AMA's, "the weight looks good on you". *g*

Male Fan Gives Excellent Review of Sterling Heights Concert

There are so many women who are big fans of Clay's, from the pre-teens to those who are, well, a bit older than that. But the male fans tend to be few and far between. And finding a male fan who not only gives a wonderful review, but also a very well thought out, knowledgable, and eloquent review of Clay's concerts is extremely gratifying. And that is what we have right here.

Brad attended the Sterling Heights concert with his wife. I've read some of his reviews before. He is honest and upfront with what he has to say, both when he likes something and when there are things he doesn't care for as much. That's another reason why his reviews are so great. Honest, knowledgable, eloquent...what more could you ask?

I think you are gonna love this review. Read on and see if you don't agree with me:

You know the particulars of the Sterling Heights concert, so I won't repeat them. My attendance recalled and reinforced for me the two reasons I love going to Clay concerts.

1) Clay's incredible voice and his instrumental artistic execution. Live performances should be far better than the studio version. They should be the difference between hearing and seeing thunder and lightning on TV and experiencing it out of doors under a canopy. But, all too frequently, live performances are an expensive disappointment. Clay's voice crackles with an electricity that milky studio recordings cloud. His single-breath phrase connecting is simply the best of anyone - even more astounding live, given stage movement and audience focus. He pays attention - gives homage - to his craft, like an artisan etching intricate metal work while surrounded by marveling enthusiastic onlookers, making it look effortless. But it's not. It takes an equally divided, equally dedicated focus on visual presentation and vocal rendition. Clay's the best, apart from his vocal gift, because he is always focused and IN THE MOMENT in each song. Which brings me to...

2) Most performers have a prefabricated scaffold of "banter" intended to fit any audience at any venue. To a limited extent, so does Clay. But my wife briefs me on the banter for each concert and most of it is never the same! I once attended three concerts in a row and the audience play was drastically, unpredictably, wonderfully different each time. Because... Clay is IN EACH MOMENT. He doesn't merely perceive or notice venue phenomena; he reacts and responds to it precisely in that moment. Take Sterling Heights. He climbs the right side stairs to a private open box and performs there (away from the sun) because the sun is in the eyes of part of the audience and he was concerned for them. It was consummate Clay! That wasn't the only impromptu moment. You already know about Clay's talk with the girl hiding in the trees who had lawn seats but wanted to be closer to the stage!

But that's why I love Clay concerts. He invites me - pushes me - to be in the moment, to be aware of the shows within the show all around me, to appreciate the gathering as well as the singing. He puts us in our moment.

Brad

P.S. The orchestra at Sterling Heights deserves special appreciation and thanks, and was one of the "shows within the show". Watching their facial expressions and body language - during the songs as well as in between - was a treat. If you haven't yet, take in the "orchestra show."

Clay Sings "Listen" with Quiana, Plans to Drop ATD

Just when you thought the man couldn't top himself anymore, Clay performed "Listen" for the first time with Quiana at last night's show in Sterling Heights. A MP3 cap is available for download at SendSpace and a video is available at ClackUnlimited.

Clay also told M&G'ers yesterday that he is planning on dropping "A Thousand Days" from the set list... no word yet on which song will replace it. I'm STILL hoping it will be"Lonely No More". ;)

Here's a YouTube clip of Clay singing "Listen" at the show last night:

Oakland Press Interviews Clay: Clay Wants to "Branch Out"

The Oakland Press published a short interview with Clay last Friday in preparation for tonight's concert in Sterling Heights, MI. Clay reveals that he would love to "branch out" into other parts of the entertainment business and hints at the fact that 100% original material will be coming on his next album.

Thanks to the CB's CAP121 for the scan... I've transcribed it into plain text for those of you who might have trouble reading the off scan:

It's been four years and three albums since Clay's runner-up turn on "American Idol." But the North Carolina-born singer says he's still trying to find his place in the pop world.

"I'm still trying to figure out exactly where I want to be and where I want to go," says Aiken, 28, who finished behind Ruben Studdard in "Idol's" second season. "I think the difference between someone like Kelly (Clarkson) and I is she really has found her niche and pushed herself beyond the 'Idol' kind of thing.

"But there are so many different things I like."

For now, Aiken is promoting his latest album, "A Thousand Different Ways," which features 10 covers - including love songs by Richard Marx, John Waite, Elton John, Bon Jovi and Dolly Parton - and four originals. It's an outgrowth of Aiken's 2004 (CDD note... this is an error... JBT was in 2005!) summer show, which focused on his personal favorites from the '50's through the present day. But Aiken says it's not necessarily a direction he'll stay in beyond this album - and he even has designs on doing more than just music.

"I think people like to put (performers) in a box and categorize them somehow - 'This person is an actor. This person is a singer,'" Aiken explains. "It's very rare you'll find somebody who's known for more than one thing.

"So right now, I think people see what we do as singing. I'd love to change that a bit to kind of branch out and be known as other things."

Clay Aiken performs with the Johnny Trudell Orchestra, at 7:30 p.m. Monday at Freedom Hill Amphitheatre.
