Let's Take a Fun Nostalgic Journey With Clay Via YouTube Videos

I thought while things have slowed down here in Claynation, it would be fun to take some time to enjoy a variety of YouTube videos over the next week or two. It will just be a hodge podge of interviews, tour performances and banter, talk shows, and whatever else I can find! We'll post two or three in each CDD article. Hope you enjoy this walk down memory lane.

Our first YouTube video is an interview from the early days of American Idol 2 with Jimmy Carter (not former President Carter!). This interview could be found at www.askjimmycarter.com at the time Clay was interviewed.

You gotta love this next one. This is posted at YouTube by "ElvisCentral", and it is of Clay singing "Invisible" in Grand Prairie/Dallas, TX during the 2004 Independent Tour. This was my first Clay concert ever. Watch him work that stage as he dances from one end to the other throughout the whole song!

And our last one for the day, posted by chacha3078, is from Jimmy Kimmel Live. The most enthusiastic audience in the history of Jimmy's show had to have been there that day! How can we ever forget the time that Clay taught Jimmy Kimmel a lesson that Jimmy has never forgotten!! And the rest of the show is even funnier. Remember, "He hit me with his cane!!"? Or how about Clay talking about the food in Ireland that was "still walking around on the plate"!! One of the best talks show interviews with Clay ever!! Betcha you'll laugh just as hard as you did the first time you saw it!

Are you through laughing yet? Okay, I'll give you a little more time....(Jeopardy music playing in the background)...Do I have your attention now? Okay, then stay tune for 3 more video coming in the next day or two. I'll surprise you every day or two with some great memories!!

Jimmy Kimmel Sports Clay Aiken Cap For Q & A

Thanks to fan Starfishy2000's eagle eyes, she caught a quick clip on The Insider of Jimmy Kimmel wearing a Clay Aiken cap and posted it on The Clayboard. After seeing the post, Clayscience videoed the spot and posted a screencap along with a link of the Q&A where Jimmy wore the hat.

The event was a Q&A session with the ABC Entertainment president. An Associated Press article entitled, Kimmel, ABC get laughs out of Leno's future gig, By Lynn Elber, has all the information about the Q&A.

Yep, Jimmy's a Clay fan for sure!!

One Year Ago This Week...Clay Was Riding High....

June 10, 2007, and Clay was riding high...on a horse that is! This time last year Clay made a grand entrance on Jimmy Kimmel Live on a horse to the surprise of everyone in the audience and those watching at home.

Jimmy introduced Clay in this way:

Our first guest tonight is one of the most intimidating figures in pop music; he's the head of the Claymates, one of the most dangerous and powerful music cartels in all the world, on July 4 he kicks off his Symphony Tour in Dallas, Texas. Please say hello to my best friend in the whole wide world...Clay Aiken!
And in comes Clay smiling, talking, and waving at the crowd! The crowd loved it! And Clay, in spite of having a bit of laringitus, was quite talkative that night.

Clay talked quite a bit about his UNICEF trip to Afghanistan and what his role is as an ambassador. We learned that he ate raisins and rice and lost 10 pounds while over there, about him growing a beard and wearing the native dress to fit in with the culture and then finding that no one over there was dressed like that! Jimmy showed some great pictures of Clay in Afghanistan.

After talking for several minutes, Jimmy mentioned that he just noticed something...that Clay appeared to be on a horse! After coming back from the commercial, Clay had gotten down off the horse and Jimmy and Clay continued a great interview, including discussion of a pin that was given to Jimmy which included the term "Climmel". Jimmy seemed to approve.

Next topic was Clay's symphony tour. Jimmy covered a lot of topics with Clay and it was definitely an appearance that Clay fans will never forget!

And, in case you have forgotten, Clay's appearance on JKL made it on AOL's "TV's Top 5" for June 10. In addition, it was voted the best of the clips for that day by AOL's readers.

If you'd like to see Clay's appearance on JKL, check out Parts 1 and 2 by samtaycai at YouTube:

  • Edmonton Sun - late night laughs ... Jimmy Kimmel mentions Clay in monologue -
    JIMMY KIMMEL LIVE

    Jimmy Kimmel

America has a new American Idol. Hillary Clinton called the loser, David Archuleta, and told him not to give up ... Lots of people have gone on to have huge careers even though they did not win: Clay Aiken, Chris Daughtry, Jennifer Hudson, Sting. Bruce Springsteen didn't win American Idol either.
  • Seacoast Online - OMWH debuts at #4 -
    4. "On My Way Here," Clay Aiken. S/19/RCA/RMG.
  • AOL Sessions - According to The Clayboard, Corabeth from CH (who has a contact at RCA) gives us this information about Clay's performance at AOL Sessions:
Corabeth (from the CH) has updated her original post about this:

RMD has just confirmed 5/27 for AOL Sessions in an email.

ETA: He didn't say in this email but prior to the taping he had told me he thought 3 songs.
So everyone check out AOL Sessions on May 27.

  • REMINDER!!! Don't forget that if you order OMWH from amazon.com, to go through Goodshop to do so. BAF gets 1.5% of your purchase there. The Alabama-born crooner’s run ends Sept. 7. He’ll be the latest “Idol” to hit Broadway, following runs by Season 3 winner Fantasia Barrino (“The Color Purple”) and a host of also-rans including Clay Aiken (“Spamalot”), Diana DeGarmo (“Hairspray”) and Constantine Maroulis (“The Wedding Singer”).
  • American Idol -
    • Aldiatx.com - a Clay mention ... in Spanish -
El joven de Murray, Utah, se tuvo que conformar con ser el segundo mejor de la competencia, pero como lo han probado concursantes anteriores como Clay Aiken o Chris Daughtry, no se necesita ganar "American Idol" para tener una carrera musical exitosa.
      In rough English:
The youngest of Murray, Utah, had to be content with being second best in the competition, but as has been proven as previous contestants Clay Aiken or Chris Daughtry, there is no need to win "American Idol" to have a successful musical career.
    • TVNZ.co.nz -
The "Davids" duel is the first time two male contestants have competed for the "Idol" title since Ruben Studdard defeated Clay Aiken in the show's second season in 2003.
    • redOrbit -
While American culture is very focused on winners taking all, the history of "American Idol" suggests that some runners up and finalists have had more lucrative careers than some winners. Jennifer Hudson, who was sixth runner-up in the 2002 run of "American Idol," won an Oscar for her role in the hit motion picture "Dreamgirls." Other notable runners-up include Clay Aiken and Chris Daughtry.
    • Newsweek -
      Real Champ
David Archuleta Tween heartthrob is like the next Josh Groban—but with louder groupies.

Clay Aiken He might be odd, but his fans adore him. He's sold 5 million albums.

Chris Daughtry He finished fourth on the show, but he had the No. 1 CD of last year.

Jimmy Mentions Clay on His Show

Jimmy Kimmel inserted a cute comment about Clay into his monologue last night. The CB's imsnoqueen writes: "During his monologue, Jimmy did some cute political ads on American Idol....one for David Cook, and one for David Archuleta. Then he said he didn't care who won, because there was only one American Idol in his heart....Clay Jefferson Aiken."

"They Can't Keep the Climmel Apart for Long!"

Clay was on Jimmy Kimmel Live last night, and as Jimmy put it best, "they can't keep the Climmel apart for long!" We'll let the video do the talking... don't miss these two great interviews - a 9 minute interview, plus a performance of "On My Way Here":

Clay Will Be Performing on Jimmy Kimmel Live on Friday

Yes Virginia, there is a Santa Claus, and Clay will be performing on Jimmy Kimmel Live Friday night, May 16. What great news! Jimmy Kimmel Live's website now lists Clay as the musical guest for Friday. Clay will also be a panel guest as well.

What we still don't know, of course, is what fun the two of them have planned for the show. Many people are as excited about that as about hearing him sing. To get ourselves even more revved up, let's walk down memory lane via pictures and remind ourselves of some of the craziness that Jimmy and/or Clay have cooked up for past shows:

Clay stole Jimmy's girlfriend in 1984

Then threw him against a wall...

...to teach him a lesson.
I think he's getting Jimmy' attention!

The fans had a little more to do with
the festivities on Valentines Day, 2005

Ah yes, Team Aiken & Bacon were "Reunited" then...

And their friendship (or is that "fanship")
grew even stronger, as Jimmy shows us

Clay shows off his tatoo to Jimmy in 2007...

And sings of sweet candy heart love
on Valentines Day 2007

Finally, Clay surprises us all with
his "horse sense".

Can't wait to see what the
two of them will be up to next!!

Might Clay Be Performing On Jimmy Kimmel Live After All?

Two more days until we get to see our beloved Clay and Jimmy united again on The Jimmy Kimmel Live Show. No telling what shennanigans they'll come up with to entertain us. But Clay has not been scheduled to sing on the show. Hmmm, or has that changed?

The following, which was posted at The Aiken Breakin' Broads site brought over from Clayversity, just may say otherwise:

Kitty4Clay is reporting at the CV:

It looks like Clay may be performing on Kimmel after all! My friend had Kate Nash tickets for the inside mini concert, and this morning she got an email saying that her tickets have been cancelled as Kate Nash has been cancelled. Her name is no longer on the Kimmel website! SOOOOOOOOOO.... who else do you think will be performing, hmmm... I wonder... Even though we didn't get inside tickets originally, we have found people who had extra due to cancellations, so we get to be in the audience.

From Quiana's myspace:

May 15 2008 12:00P
Check me out with Clay Aiken on Jimmy Kimmel
I especially love Quina's post that she will be at Kimmel along with Clay. And Jimmy Kimmel Live's Online site shows Friday as the ONLY day that does not mention a musical guest. It just says, "TV/radio host Ryan Seacrest, musician Clay Aiken".

Only 2 days till we find out! Let the speculating begin!!

Jimmy Kimmel Looking to "Rekindle" with Clay

On Friday's edition of his show, Jimmy Kimmel said he was looking forward to Clay's appearance next week so they can "rekindle their love". We can't wait to see what the dynamic duo have up their sleeves this time around.

Clay appears on Jimmy Kimmel Live on Friday, May 16. The show airs early Saturday morning at 12:05 AM in most markets.

Here's a montage that looks at the past 5 years of Jimmy & Clay:

Tidbits 5/10

  • Clayboard - All4luv heard a Clay mention on the Jimmy Kimmel show Friday night. She says, "Jimmy mentioned how Clay will be on the show next week to "rekindle their love!!" Can't wait to see wha t those two have cooking!!!"
  • According to CaliClayFan at The Clayboard, "Just saw that Clay's going to be on Good Day LA next week. They showed a clip of the Amazon video and said he'd be in studio next week."
  • Clay was interviewed on 97.1 WASH FM in Washington D.C. today by one of their disc jockeys, Maureen. I must say that this was one of the best interviews I've heard in a long time. So positive and she really seemed to genuinely like Clay and his CD. Check out the interview for news about UNICEF, his visit with Rachel Ray, has Clay gone green, and his mother's day plans.
  • Andecar at The Clayboard found the following information in her Sunday newspaper:
I just received my Sunday newspaper inserts and comics and Clay is listed in the inside cover of the US Magazine. It's the question and answer section where there's a recent photo of Clay and the question is from a Brazilian fan who wanted to know what Clay plans to do now that Spamalot is finished. The answer was promote his new CD and relax at home in North Carolina.
  • The Salt Lake Tribune - In an article about David Archuleta, Clay is mentioned as follows:
That's why losing "American Idol" could be good, in the long run, for Archuleta's career.
For one thing, only two of the previous six "Idol" champs, Kelly Clarkson and Carrie Underwood, have attained superstar status. Meanwhile, several "Idol" also-rans (Jennifer Hudson, Clay Aiken and Chris Daughtry, for example) have fared better than their season's champs.

We'll keep you posted on this, but as of right now, this new date is not official and Clay is still scheduled to appear on May 15.

Tidbits 4/22

Clay and Tyra Banks are featured in today's People Magazine StarTracks. Tyra recently visited Clay on the set of Spamalot to tape a special segment for her Tyra Banks Show. An air date has not been set yet. The same photo is also featured at JustJared.com.

  • antiMusic - Clay makes the rounds on late night shows to promote new album -
f you're a bit underwhelmed by the current crop of American Idols, an old favorite is returning to your television screen and you won't have to put up with Paula to watch. Which favorite is it? It's the guy who's fans sent over dozens emails to let us know that their hero was going to be back on TV. That's right, it's Clay Aiken and he's going on a late night TV blitz to promote his new album.

Claymates will make a run on record retailers on May 6th, when Aiken's new album, 'On My Way Here,' is released and the following week he'll make two late night appearances to promote it.

First up, he'll head over to Burbank to appear on the Tonight Show with Jay Leno on May 12th and then he'll make an appearance on the Jimmy Kimmel Show on May 15th. We received conflicting information from the fans that wrote in about the Kimmel appearance. Some said Clay was performing and others said he wasn't. So we fired off an email to the show's publicist and she confirmed that "Clay Aiken is booked for an interview" only. The musical guest on that night will be Dierks Bentley.
  • American Idol mentions:
    • All Headline News -
While judge Simon Cowell often chastises contestants for sounding "too Broadway," all six will have to pull out the big numbers for the Broadway themed show. Despite Cowell's remarks, many former "American Idol" contestants have gone on to have successful runs on Broadway, including Fantasia and Clay Aiken.
    • Deseret News on Carmen Rasmusen's thorn with American Idol -
Rasmusen's April 18 column gave us a behind-the-scenes look at how "Idol" works. She wrote of one experience waiting to consult the show's vocal coach while Clay Aiken was being coached.

"I could hear him going over and over his song, dissecting it. Finally, after about 30 minutes, the door opened. It was my turn. I walked in and sang my song about three times before being dismissed. Hardly the personal one-on-one attention Aiken had just received."
    • Courier Post Online -
But who cares about costing an innocent bystanders hundreds of dollars? In the 2003 "American Idol" finale, 130,000 votes separated winner Ruben Studdard from the runner-up, Clay Aiken. A few days later, a phone company in the Midwest said it had received 240,000 misdialed calls during voting.
    • Philadelphia Inquirer -
It's unlikely that the producers who saw the very pretty Kelly Clarkson triumph over the even prettier Justin Guarini that first summer ever envisioned anything like the tuneful but less-photogenic showdown between Season 2 finalists Ruben Studdard and Clay Aiken, much less the Season 5 victory of Taylor Hicks, a twitchy, gray-haired Alabamian whose personality charmed millions but who's been eating the dust of fourth-place contestant Chris Daughtry ever since.
    • The Campus Press - Idols ... where they are now: "Clay Aiken, the runner up on season two of American Idol has been singing and dancing his way on Broadway in Monty Python's Spamalot, which tells the story of King Arthur and his knights of the round table."
  • antiMusic - random mention:
You see the Ozzy track was playing on my iTunes when I clicked over to Pendulum's Myspace and one of their songs started autoplaying. It was a strange mix, but actually worked. Maybe we'll start a new online crazy with Myspace/iTunes antimash-ups? We're gonna go try Iron Maiden and Clay Aiken right now.

Tidbits 3/4

  • Jimmy Kimmel Live - Janet Jackson was on Jimmy Kimmel Live tonight talking about her fans. Here is the exact discussion courtesy of annie2053 at The Clayboard:
Kimmel: Do they have nicknames, like a lot of times groups like a... the Claymates... Clay Aiken has his Claymates? Do you have any?
    Janet: Janet Fans
Kimmel: Very creative. Get with it guys! (laughter by audience).

Tidbits 1/12

  • Carolina Newswire - In an article entitled, Clay Aiken Premiers His New Smile On Broadway, Clay's dentist tells a little about giving Clay his "new smile".
Clay contacted me right after he landed a booking on the Jimmy Kimmel show,” said Dr. Stanley. “It was only five days before his appearance and he really wanted a new smile before the show.”
    And Clay says:
“It was a great experience. Dr. Stanley fit me in at the very last-minute and provided me with a wonderful new smile,” said Clay. “It was really more of a spa experience than a dental appointment. Although I live in Raleigh, I know that Dr. Stanley has a program for out-of-town patients who want to come in for a long weekend and go home with a beautiful new smile.”
  • Florida Sun Sentinel - American Idol article ...
Idol is so influential, winning isn't essential. Chris Daughtry, who finished fourth behind Hicks, sold 2.5 million copies of his self-titled album in 2007. Only Josh Groban, the High School Musical 2 soundtrack, the Eagles and Alicia Keys had greater sales.

Then there's Clay Aiken and Oscar winner Jennifer Hudson.
  • MTV.ca - music history:
In 2004...American Idol runner-up Clay Aiken donated 20-thousand dollars to his alma mater, the University of North Carolina at Charlotte, and performed during halftime at a men's basketball game there.
  • Actress Archives - Katharine McPhee leaves RCA Records:
But it's not like AI has lost all of its star-making luster. Sony-BMG still has nine contenders in its stables, including Carrie Underwood, Chris Daughtry, Blake Lewis, Fantasia, Jordin Sparks, Jennifer Hudson, Clay Aiken, and Kelly Clarkson.
  • New York Daily News - Katharine McPhee ....
The BMG group still counts eight "AI" contenders on its roster, including Carrie Underwood and Chris Daughtry (both of whom delivered top 10 albums in 2007), Blake Lewis (with one album), Fantasia (with three), Jordin Sparks (working on her second), and Clay Aiken and Kelly Clarkson (both working on their fourth albums).
  • And more on Katharine McPhee being dropped by RCA -
    • The Celebrity Cafe | The Celebrity Cafe alternate article - "The NY Daily News reports other American Idol members, Carrie Underwood, Chris Daughtry, Fantasia, Blake Lewis, Clay Aiken, and Kelly Clarkson, will all still continue on BMG's "major leagues" roster."
    • FOX News -
According to the Daily News, the BMG group still counts eight "Idols" on its roster, including Carrie Underwood and Chris Daughtry (both of whom delivered top 10 albums in 2007), Blake Lewis (with one album), Fantasia (with three), Jordin Sparks (working on her second) and Clay Aiken and Kelly Clarkson (both working on their fourth albums).
  • San Antonio Express News - AI returns!
Consider the cream of the crop from previous seasons:

"Kelly Clarkson turned into a great superstar; Ruben Studdard and Clay Aiken, amazing; Fantasia, amazing; Carrie Underwood and Bo Bice, amazing."
  • USA Today - looking back at 6 seasons of American Idol:
But by now, Idol has a history and a heritage. Clay and Ruben, Kelly and Carrie, Taylor and Fantasia, even Sanjaya need no introduction, nor even a last name.

Best season: Simon: Season 1, 2 (because of the Clay-Ruben competition)

    Best performance by a finalist:
Paula: Fantasia, Summertime; Carrie Underwood, Alone by Heart; Blake Lewis, beatboxing to Bon Jovi's You Give Love a Bad Name; Clay Aiken, Bridge Over Troubled Water

    Worst performance by a finalist:
Paula: Clay Aiken, Saturday Night's Alright for Fighting; LaKisha Jones, Stayin' Alive.

    Contestant with best personality:
Randy: Kelly, Fantasia, Carrie, Clay and Ruben
  • Press release via Earth Times - survey seeks to find out why southerners perform so well on "American Idol" -
-- Season 2 - Winner, Ruben Studdard, from Birmingham, Ala., beat Clay Aiken from Raleigh, N.C. Five of the other 12 finalists were from Southern states. (Total Southerners in final 12:7).
  • USA Today idol article quotes a Variety editor... he is entitled to his opinion, even though we complete disagree -
He says the competition should steer clear of quirky singers such as Season 2 runner-up Clay Aiken, who hasn't been able to match the sales of his multiplatinum first album. "Because of Clay Aiken they've always said don't judge a book by its cover. But they've wound up with singers really locked into a single style who don't have the varied skills they're looking for" in the record business.
