Tidbits 8/19

  • New York Post - "obsessed" with being "unsexy" ... Clay's "Sexyback" ...
    1. Being unsexy

The least sexy thing we've ever seen is Clay Aiken performing Justin Timberlake's hit “SexyBack,” complete with puckered lips and two backup “dancers.” Watch it at Hollyscoop.com
  • The Toronto Star (above, right) also has a link to Clay's "Sexyback" performance, along with a big photo from the Frisco concert.
  • The Hartford Courant has a really clever headline writer ... this sports article has nothing to do with Clay, but check out the headline: "From Clay To Achin'"
  • Raleigh News & Observer -
'American Idol' auditions search for next Clay, Fantasia ... North Carolinians are no stranger to "Idol" [see Clay Aiken and Fantasia Barrino].
  • "Idol: The Musical" closes:
    • Northwest Arkansas News Source -
We could have had the American Idol-theme musical inspired by us close after just one day, which is what happened to Idol, a show about Clay Aiken and his fervent fans (neither the singer nor American Idol was involved in the musical ).
    • Monterey Herald - "'Idol: The Musical,' based on fans who worship "American Idol" contestant Clay Aiken, has been canceled after just one day because of poor ticket sales."

Tidbits 8/16

The Palm Beach Post is continuing their 4 days of Clay, profiling a new Clay fan everyday until Clay's concert in Palm Beach on Saturday. Today's lucky Claymate is Carolyn Valenti.

Bringing nerdy back: "I always thought he was cute. I like my men a little dorky. Everyone has a thing. I like when he wears his hair short. But long, short...it could be in pin curls and it wouldn't matter to me....As Baby Boomers, we redefined what masculinity means. He has a sensitivity, a cute kind of nerdiness."

Her first television Clay encounter: "The wild card show (during the second season of "American Idol"). He had been sent home, and it was sad. But once he was there, that was it."

Her first Clay encounter, live, up close and personal: On the Massacussetts turnpike after a show, when he and the crew were getting hamburgers.
The article goes on to list the writer's top 5 Clay Aiken songs and talk about Kathy Griffin.
1) "Solitaire" - Having been a teen drama queen, I was a huge version of the weepy, sweeping Carpenters version, but Clay's voice brought it to new heights of glorious misery. "...And solitaire's the only game in town..." SOB!

...
  • Clay is #16 at this week's Lycos50.
  • Associated Content - nice promo for Clay's appearance on "Are You Smarter Than A 5th Grader", but at least get the spelling of his name right... :(
Clay Akin, who came in second to Ruben Studdard on American Idol's second season, is now a multi- platinum recording artist. But he'll soon appear on another reality show: An all-celebrity version of "Are You Smarter Than A 5th Grader?" on Fox TV some time in the coming season.

He is the co founder of The Bubel/Aiken Foundation (TBAF), and for his appearance of the show, the foundation is guaranteed to receive at least $25,000. The way it will work is that the foundation will receive money for each question he gets right. If he gets all 11 questions right, the foundation will receive one million dollars. He was a special education teacher before he tried out for American Idol and he hit it big in the musical industry, so he may do pretty well.
  • More buzz surrounding the 5th Grader appearance:
    • On E! News, reports the CV's starhorse:
Was watching the E! Channel this program about Reese Witherspoon and the E! News Ticker came up on the bottom. Like 5 different stories popped up.. The first one was about Britney... the second was about Clay and said something like Clay Aiken will appear on the celebrity addition of Are You Smarter then a 5th grader? and that he is playing for his own charity the Bubel Aiken foundation that focuses on chirdlren with special needs. Pretty cool if you ask me that they deemed it news worthy enough to put it in the ticker
    • On a Portland, OR radio station, says the CB's hanapepe:
The sky is loaded with flying pigs in Portland, OR as a local radio station just announced Clay's appearance on "Are You Smarter Than a Fifth Grader?" for their morning celeb newsbits. While this station isn't really Clay-friendly, they DID mention that his appearance would benefit his charity.
  • A few tidbits of Clay's scheduled appearance on the Neil Sedaka 50th anniversary concert -
    • Undercover.com.au - "Showbiz legend Neil Sedaka is to be honoured for his 50 years in the biz by Natalie Cole, The Captain & Tenille and Clay Aiken in New York in October."
  • Tour mentions:
    • Palm Beach Daily News -
Country orchestra: Clay Aiken will perform with orchestra at 8 p.m., Saturday, at the Kravis Center for the Performing Arts, 701 Okeechobee Blvd., West Palm Beach. Tickets $20 - $100. Call 832-7469.
    • Bradenton Herald -
      IDOLIZED

Clay Aiken, a runner-up on the second season of "American Idol," is a major star now, since his television appearances and 2003 release of "The Measure of a Man."

He's released two more albums since then, and now is coming to Tampa Bay for a concert.

Aiken performs with a 42-piece orchestra at 8 p.m. Friday in the Tampa Bay Performing Arts Center. Tickets are $55.50 -$75.50, and can be purchased online at tbpac.org, at the performing arts center box office, or by calling (800) 955-1045
  • Guam Pacific Daily News - "Guam Idol" wraps up -
Auditions for a shot at being the next American Idol, the show that launched the careers of Kelly Clarkson, Clay Aiken and Fantasia Barrino, wrapped up Thursday night as Guam Idol held their seventh and final preliminary round to determine the 14 participants for a final sing-off on Aug. 22.
  • More "Idol: The Musical" mentions:
    • The Stage News - "The musical takes place in Steubenville, Ohio where a group of high-school students belong to a club fanatically devoted to all things Clay Aiken, a former American Idol contestant."
    • National Post - "A musical about fans of American Idol's Clay Aiken lasted one night on Broadway."
    • iFMagazine - someone send them a fact checker! The musical wasn't even started by Clay fans; but then again, it's the American media... what do you expect? -
In a shocking turn of events, Clay Aiken’s fans, known as Clay-mates, were dealt a serious blow to their attempt at world domination this week as their self-promoting theater project, dubbed IDOL: THE MUSICAL, was s***-canned after just one night because of poor ticket sales, a lack of positive feedback and the whole thing about critics lambasting it as a bucket load of baby vomit.
    • AOL TMZ -
An "American Idol"-themed musical inspired by Clay Aiken and his army of obsessive fans has gone up in smoke just one day after it went up in lights on a Broadway marquee. Did we mention it was about Clay Aiken obsessives?

Backstage magazine called "Idol" "interminable, amateurish, headache-inducing," and that was just in the first paragraph of its review. Just for the record, neither Aiken nor "American Idol" the show were involved in the production.
    • The Advocate - "It was an open-and-shut case for Idol: The Musical. August 12 was the opening night for the show that depicted young intense fans of Idol season 2 runner-up Clay Aiken, who wanted to get out of his small town. It closed the same night."
    • Raleigh News & Observer -
"Idol," based on the fan mania surrounding Clay Aiken, closed after Sunday's opening-night performance in New York City. Before that show, the production ran through 47 preview performances.
  • AOL TMZ on Clay singing Sexyback (tabloid site... negative)

Tidbits 8/14

  • WRAL - the coolest places in and around Raleigh ... Clay's house is listed... but WRAL seems to have forgotten that Clay already gave their Lynda Loveland a tour of his house last year:
Where Should We Go Next? Tell Us

We’ve scoped out some more architectural and decorative gems, but we want you to tell us where we should knock next. Shoot us an e-mail and we’ll do our best to take Knock, Knock’s camera and crew inside.

Here's some of our viewer suggestions to date: The Mormon temple in Apex, The Umstead hotel in Cary, homes on Lakeview Drive in Raleigh, River Mill condos off Falls of the Neuse, the American Tobacco complex, Gimghoul Castle in Chapel Hill, 318 E. Davie St. in Raleigh, and Clay Aiken's house in Wake County. Keep the ideas coming.
  • Well, it appears "Idol: The Musical" is more popular than ever... after it was cancelled on its opening night:
    • Reuters wire story -
A musical inspired by the hit reality television show "American Idol" has been voted off the stage in New York -- closing one day after officially opening off Broadway.
    • CBC.ca -
It may be a television blockbuster but an off-Broadway musical inspired by hit TV singing contest American Idol hasn't won any fans.

Sunday's opening night of Idol: The Musical was also its closing night.

Dubbed a "satirical musical comedy," Idol: The Musical told the story of an eclectic band of high schoolers who are united by their passion for American Idol and devotion to past runner-up Clay Aiken. The misfits are delighted when they hear the pop crooner is set to visit their town during an Idol tour.

The musical was scrapped following 47 preview performances and one regular show.
    • New Yorker Magazine -
Voted Off: An American Idol–themed, Clay Aiken–worshipping Off Broadway musical leaves the stage today after just one night at the 45th Street Theater. Producer Todd Ellis cites a “lack of advance ticket sales, a lack of positive feedback from audience members and critics and a lack of sustainable financial resources.” So apart from those things, it was a smashing success.
    • More... but no Clay mentions: BBC News, ABC News Australia
  • Ohio State University's The Lantern interviews AI6 idols -
Since 2002, "American Idol" has been responsible for majority of the hits on the radio. From season one winner Kelly Clarkson dominating the charts, to Carrie Underwood, to even Clay Aiken.
  • Naples News - another AI article -
And you can’t get more famous than the contestants on "American Idol." Still a ratings juggernaut after six seasons, the show has created one legitimate star, (Kelly Clarkson) a handful of surprising success stories (Clay Aiken, Jennifer Hudson) and a fair share of flashes in the pan (Justin Guarini, anyone?).
  • Livingston Daily - singer lists Clay Aiken, Kelly Clarkson as influences -
Aside from Bennett, Mentley listed singers Clay Aiken, Kelly Clarkson, Judy Garland and Josh Groban among her other musical influences.

    ...

Favorite singers: Judy Garland, Josh Groban, Kelly Clarkson and Clay Aiken. "They all have such powerful, rich voices," according to Mentley.
  • New York Daily News - the "Kelly Ripa" fiasco from last year surfaces again... isn't it time to give it a rest??? -
Hottie Enrique Iglesias was in NYC yesterday to guest-host "Live With Regis and Kelly" alongside Ms. Ripa. We're betting this more than makes up for the Clay Aiken incident.
  • Carolina On My Mind - tour hits an emotional week in NC; Claymates continue sharing clack, reports through the so-called "Aiken network" (love the sound of that!)

Tidbits 8/13

  • Florida is bracing for a quadruple dose of Clay Aiken, as the 2007 Summer tour enters its home stretch. The Sun Sentinel republished a Houston Chronicle interview from last month in advance of Clay mania in Florida -
    Bringing dorky back
Singer Clay Aiken of American Idol fame will perform with orchestra at 8 p.m. Saturday at the Kravis Center, 701 Okeechobee Blvd., West Palm Beach. Tickets are $10 to $100. Call 561-832-7469 or visit www.kravis.org
  • Nice find from the CB's ClaysMyMidlifeCrisis - a photo of Clay with venue security during his Christmas tour stop in Wilke Barres last year. It just dawned on me how long his hair was back then ... (click the photo on the right to enlarge).
  • Short blip about Clay and California Claymates in USA Today, says the CB's claymate11. The "Clay Aiken fanclub" being referred to in the article is a group of fans who held their Pala pre-concert meet up at Tori Spelling's inn before Clay's concert at the Pala Casino Starlight on August 3 (see the invitation on the right):
On page 2D of today's issue of USA Today there is an article on Tori Spelling's new reality TV show. In the article is this quote "What will be shown this season is Spelling becoming ordained and performing a @#%$ wedding , the arrival of the Clay Aiken Fan Club (but no appearance by Aiken)" Her show is on Oxygen and is called Tori and Dean: In Love. She plays the hostess of a B & B. Did anyone else catch this mention? What fan club is going to be featured?
  • CBS Showbuzz - you don't have to win Idol to find success -
Constantine Maroulis finished sixth place on Season 4 of "American Idol." To some, that might not be the greatest showing, but former Idols are proving again and again that you don't have to win to be a star.

Chris Daughtry from Season 5 is enjoying immense success with his band, Jennifer Hudson from Season 3 won and Oscar for her role in "Dreamgirls" and Season 2's Clay Aiken is a household name.
  • "Idol: The Musical" is calling it quits. The show has officially closed in New York -
    • Playbill News -
The Aug. 12 opening night of Idol: The Musical Ð based on the fan worship of former "American Idol" contestant Clay Aiken Ð was also the show's closing night.

The new musical, which began previews July 5, has closed. A press statement issued Aug. 13 reads, "Todd Ellis, the producer of Idol: The Musical, has chosen to close the show due to a lack of advance ticket sales, a lack of positive feedback from audience members and critics, and a lack of sustainable financial resources."
    • Broadway World - "Idol: The Musical, which began previews on July 7th and opened August 12th at the 45th Street Theatre, has announced that it has closed due to poor ticket sales."
    • NJ.com -
Based on a concept by producer Todd Ellis, who premiered the show earlier at the Syracuse Civic Theatre he runs in upstate New York, "Idol: The Musical" regards a group of high school misfits who worship Clay Aiken, the singer of "American Idol" fame.
    • Backstage.com -
Idol: The Musical aspires to be The Full Monty for the Gen Y crowd — a look at a group of small-town misfits, who see in American Idol winner Clay Aiken a hero and role model.

Tidbits 8/12

  • ABC News - roundup of the late night comedy.. for Jay Leno's show:
The debate was here in Los Angeles and it centered on topics of interest to the gay community -- which I don't understand. Don't gay voters care about the same things as straight voters -- health care, the war in Iraq, what's the deal with Clay Aiken? These are the issues, these are the issues we want to know about.
  • Playbill - "Idol: The Musical", "based on the fan worship of former "American Idol" contestant Clay Aiken and featuring direction by Daniel Tursi — officially opens at the 45th Street Theatre Aug. 12. Previews began July 5."
  • Lincoln Journal Star - Raleigh rapper looking to be Raleigh's next Clay Aiken ...
Small World thought about why he’ll follow Clay Aiken as the next big thing from Raleigh and why North Carolina rappers haven’t made a dramatic dent in the hip-hop scene.
  • Meadville Tribune - 2007 turning out to be a bad year for fair concerts ...
In 2005, the Crawford County Fair did hit two home runs.

Country music star Toby Keith actually had more than 10,000 seats sold — 10,248 as the fair board squeezed in the 248 extras on the race track.

However, only 3,100 turned out for adult contemporary singer Clay Aiken’s concert that year.

  • ClayKat - a beautifully written, honest and candid post about that certain someone who "made false accusations [about Clay] in early 2006" and why he showed up at Clay's Cary show on Friday night ...
I just need to share my anger at some people who for some sick reason, get kicks out of goading Clay, in his very face, in his home-state... Clay's summer tour stopped in Cary, North Carolina last night, and as well as the huge crowd of Clay fans, there was a certain someone in the audience with bad intent, a person who has slandered Clay and made false accusations in early 2006. If that guy - who will remain nameless because I will not provide links nor an easy way to find his garbage - had a shread of decency in him, he would not have bought tickets to Clay's concert, for goodness' sake! He would have stayed far away. It just makes me sad to think how Clay must have felt last night, during the concert, knowing those nasty eyes were on him.

I am happy to learn, despite my and others' feelings about this man, that there were no incidents having to do with him, at the concert. However, the handshake line that Clay often does after his concerts, was cancelled for security reasons. Ah, let's see... what could those be? Could they have to do with the evil-doer? In my opinion - of course that's why the handshake line was cancelled! So thanks to that ill-intentioned guy, hundreds of peaceful, Clay-loving fans did not get to shake Clay's hands - and I bet that Clay himself was somewhat shaken by the situation.

Tidbits 8/11

  • As disappointed as the Cary fans were last night, Mary ... Clay's tour manager ... blogged on Clay's OFC blog explaining why Clay wasn't allowed to walk the bus line after the show in Cary, NC last night: "for security reasons that some of you already understand, we can't allow Clay to 'walk the line' tonight."
  • Broadway World - "Idol: The Musical" officially opening in NYC tomorrow...
Idol: The Musical, a satire on the worship of former "American Idol" finalist, Clay Aiken, opens Sunday, August 12 at 8:15PM off-Broadway at the 45th Street Theatre (354 West 45th St).
  • Tour mentions:
    • Naples News - "You know the name. Now hear the man. Clay Aiken. He will perform at 7:30 p.m. Thursday at the Barbara B. Mann Performing Arts Hall"
    • Atlanta Sunday Paper -
      WED 15
SECOND-PLACE SUCCESS: Singer CLAY AIKEN may not have taken home the title during the second season of “American Idol,” but he won the hearts of countless fans who continue to support his career in music. Aiken performs with the Atlanta Symphony Orchestra tonight at 8 p.m. at Chastain Park. Tickets are $28$79. 404-249-6400. www.clayaiken.com.
    • Northwest Herald - Christmas tour ... Waukegan
  • NBC 17 Raleigh - fans camp out for Clay Aiken -
"The main reason we're here is for Clay," said David Strickland, who got in line around 9AM. "It's worth the wait and the heat."

Clay Aiken fans hoping to catch his show at the Koka Booth Amphitheater Friday night sweated it out through the worst of it. Most seemed prepared for the grueling wait.
  • IGN - reviewer doesn't like Constantine Maroulis, nor Clay very much...
Those fanatics will claim that I am being unfair to the singer because of his appearance on Idol and that I live only to bash the hit-making factory that churns out so much waste product on the musical landscape. But my defense is the positive review I gave Daughtry's debut release. Take that fact and the fact that I was unable to actually sit through even one song of Clay Aiken's debut release and you have to know that I know my Idol singers.
  • There Was A Man on Clay's hometown performance of BYLM:
Clay Aiken has been ending his summer tour with "Because You Loved Me" as a thank you to his fans for their support. A lot has happened in the fandom over the four years, but the fans that have stayed for the ride on the rollercoaster are steadfast in their admiration and appreciation of a fantastic singer and a really good man. As a response to Clay's thank you, the fans decided to wave glowsticks as an expression of their love and support. It's always a moving end to the show, but none so poignant as when he sang to his hometown crowd (along with many of his travelling fan posse) in Cary NC on August 10th.
  • Carolina On My Mind - Cary, NC show a "family reunion" of sorts

Tidbits 8/3

  • Canton Daily Ledger - metal music article... random mention:
Few rational music fans could imagine a world where Kelly Clarkson toured with Slayer or Clay Aiken covered The Black Dahlia Murder’s “Funeral Thirst.”
  • Kane County Chronicle - Christmas tour listing: "CLAY AIKEN, 7:30 p.m. Nov. 29, Genesee Theatre, 203 N. Genesee St., Waukegan. Tickets: $68-$83."
  • Playbill - producers bring in new cast for "Idol: The Musical" ahead of official opening -
America didn't get the chance to vote, but the entire cast of Idol: The Musical — based on the fan worship of former "American Idol" contestant Clay Aiken — has gone home. Producers announced Aug. 3 that the entire cast was replaced prior to the show's official opening.
  • The ConCLAYve - cute skit... a Klimmel conversation:
(Clay and Kimmel are talking on their iPhones.)

Clay: Well, Jimmy? Are ya comin’ ta the Greek or aren’tcha?

Kimmel (reluctantly): Um...I wanted to talk to you about that--

Clay (firmly): Uh-UH. No excuses. It’s on a Saturday night, so don’t be tellin’ me ya got a show or hafta tape that goofy game show o' yores. NOT.BUYIN.’

Kimmel: Actually, I was going to ask if you had any more VIP tickets you could--

Clay: MORE tickets? (smiling) So yore rilly comin?’

Kimmel: Of course. (laying it on thick) You’re my best friend and soulmate, aren'tcha? Your poster is over my bed, isn't it? I’m all about supporting the arts, aren't I? And--

Clay Nation News Talks to "Idol: The Musical" Producer

Corabeth at Clay Nation News recently spoke with the producers of the off-broadway musical, Idol: The Musical - now playing in New York - based on Clay Aiken, Claymania and us... Claymates. Here is a snippet of the interview - the full interview is available in your email inboxes (for C.N.N. subscribers) and a full version should be up at the Clay Nation News website soon.

Clay attended a Friday night showing of the show last week.

CB: Tell me about the creative process

Todd: It was my concept. I had been working in Syracuse for the last twelve years producing over 100 shows and I wanted to move to New York City.

I really wanted to do something about pop culture but the positive side of pop culture. American Idol stuck out as being one of the biggest things in pop culture and so I thought back about the show to decide which person embodied both pop culture and a positive image and I chose Clay. I came up with three songs and the titles of all the others and I hired Bill and Jon and they ran with it.

CB: Why Clay?

Todd: Well, he's from North Carolina and I'm originally from the South, Kentucky and Tennessee. I can relate to him, I was a geek in high school and so I related to the original Clay that we met in the auditions. But, he had the makeover I'm 45 and I'm still a geek.

CB: You chose American Idol as your pop culture reference, why?

Todd: I watched a little of Season 1 and I really watched Season 2. What I loved was the camaraderie between Clay and Ruben, it was real. I think Clay should have won but Ruben has a great voice.

CB: They have stayed friends.

Todd: I think that's great! Clay was the classic underdog story and in many ways still is. It would have been easy for him to just fade away and instead he went to the top.

Clay Attends "Idol The Musical" on Friday Night

According to iluvmusic2 at The Clayboard, Stripedshirt at Clayversity was lucky enough to go see "Idol The Musical" on Friday night, and Clay and his entourage showed up there on the same night! What are the chances of that happening?

Here is the report from Stripedshirt:

reporting from striped.... at CV:

I cannot believe my luck tonight.

I went to see IDOL THE MUSICAL.....and guess who shows up? CLAY!!! He brought the posse w/ him - Angela, Quiana, Mary, Jerome, Jamie, plus the girl who we lovingly dub 'Sweater Girl' & an unidentified male (I think it's Sweater Girl's date) I cannot believe of all nights I wound buying a tkt to the show, that he would come finally come & see it for himself.

And guess what? he liked it! Even though parts of the show were so cheesy & ridiculous, he liked it!

He did not boo, hiss or hurl things on the stage. When the show ended, he was the first to stand up & give a standing ovation, which the kids up there REALLY appreciated. The kids were on their full A Game tonight & acted very well, I was so proud of them. I don't know how many of you here have seen the musical - so you may not connect immediately to what I'm trying to say, especially the scenes I'm describing - but this is the best I can as far as connecting those moments to the looks on Clay's face.

Here are what I can gather:

Clay arrived quietly w/ his crew into the theatre around 8:20 - and there were some gasps in the audience when they realize he was inside - and I had a perfect view of him from where I sat, which was off the side, diagonal. Clay was sandwiched btwn Mary & Sweater Chick, Jamie sat w/ Jerome who took an aisle seat. Jerome was so big, his legs stuck out on the sides. I could've tapped him if I wanted but I kept quiet & observed Clay. Quiana & Angela sat one row behind them.

The minute they all seated, the lights dimmed & the 1st no. 'Idolize' started. The actors attacked it w/ so vigor & verocity that it was overwhelming to watch w/ Clay in the audience, & I had a difficult time trying to figure out who to keep my eyes on - him or the actors who were ripping into the no. My eyes were flipping backm & forth..... And Clay's reactions to this were priceless!!! Oh my god - it killed me not to be able to take a photo of his facial expressions when he was watching the 1st no. - he had the program book open, and up against his face, covering his mouth and nose - and when the Flat Clay was unveiled, he jerked in his seat, sending the program flying onto Mary's lap, which he quickly retrieved. Part of the time he was bending to whisper something into either Mary's ear or Sweater Girl's ear. The other times he watched w/ his finger to his lips, taking it all in, or cringing from some of the nos. making his chin disappear into his neck. Everyone around him were choking, they were laughing so hard, & it was real funny watching Jerome wipe his eyes. At one point Clay even yelped 'oh god!'

I can only remember bits & pieces of what I saw of Clay because there were moments I was watching the musical, which has improved some since the first time I saw it the first wk it opened; alot of subtle edits have been done, as well as additions. One of them, was the 'armrest' bit - the cowboy had his feet on the armrest of the couch, prompting the girl Alex, the grease faced gas station attendant, to shout "Get your foot off my armrest!" I missed Clay's reaction on that one, I don't know if audience caught that one, but I'm sure he must've snickered. I did not miss his reaction to the "I'm NOT Kelly Ripa" bit - he nodded his head & clapped his hands for that one.

And the far funniest moments was during the "Burning Hunk of Clay"/Claygasm no. when the actress was making out w/ the Clay bust, then started to remove her cardigan, skirt & pulled out the whip, screaming, "Oh Clay, OH CLAY" his eyes got so big I thought they were going to pop. Mary was shaking all over laughing.

The actors all had their eyes on the left side of the house where Clay sat during the finale, & when they all took a bow one by one, it was almost as if they were saluting Clay. It was a cool moment.

Later, Todd Ellis the producer came towards Clay as the audience filed out, & asked him to stick around so the actors could meet him. The doors closed shut as I stepped outside, but I sat on a stool & waited. Waiting w/ me were 2 others who knows the cast, so they were hanging around to get their loved ones. Behind the door, I could laugh applause, then laughter, then clapping, then Clay talking rapidly; I couldn't make out a word he said, it was too far & somewhat muffled. But they were all having a good time inside, & I felt so glad he made this musical; it turned out Todd went to the Syracuse concert just last wk. & his wife got to talk to Clay for a bit about coming to see the show. That paid off tonight when Clay brought his troop in.

10 minutes later, the doors swung open, & out walked Jerome, Quiana, Sweater Girl & then Clay - they all walked out, & there was a yellow cab outside which Jerome got Clay into. Clay didn't stop for pics or autographs & there were a small group of fans who stood out there. The cab sped West, towards Jersey. I'm willing to bet tomorrow night there may or may not be some mention about Idol The Musical at the Newark concert, but we'll see; if he does, it'd be a great plug for the show.

Now -- this is where I need help from anyone out there who can do a SENDIT link, because I don't know how. I have video, just 19 seconds of Clay exiting the theatre after his pep talk w/ the kids. It's not much, but I know you all want to see it & I'm glad I got it. Can someone here help me?
ClaysMyMidlifeCrises also reports the following from Stripeshirt:
More reporting from stripedshirts at CV....

I'm actually quite calm as a matter of fact I've done my screaming & creaming at the theatre, believe me.

I was walking around Times Square tonight after the show, grinning like a fool, people were looking at me wondering what the hell was wrong w/ me. They have no idea.....

Clay wore a white button down shirt, baggy canvas shorts, dark flip flops. In the dark, he looked like a glow worm! Mary, Jamie, Sweater girl all work dark colors, as did Jerome; Sweater girl's male companion had a white shirt also, so he also stuck out a little. Clay's hair....I think was the same...but yes, he looked really good.

Angela & Quiana wore jeans & Angela had some nice bling on & a nice printed top.

i also remembered watching Clay during the slower nos. He couldn't stop rubbing his hands & curling & intertwining his fingers together. That, and coupled w/ his serious, pensive expression was enough to send me over the edge because I found that so hot.

And, he whooped a 'WHOO!' when the musical finished. That was his stamp of approval!

These actors will be putting their last show this Sunday; next week, a new cast replaces the old one as those kids pack up & return to Syracuse. (w/ exception for one, a guy who plays stripper/Chippendale J.D.) I'll miss this crew, these kids did a great job.

The New York Times, Village Voice & others will come the 2nd wk of August to do a review, & it'd be interesting to read the critic's take on this show; so it's building quite a bit of momentum & w/ Clay having been there, I'm sure he's helped Todd Ellis raise a lot of interest for the musical!!
Now that we know Clay approves of the musical, I'll bet Clay fans will be attending it in record numbers! Let's hope that he will mention something about the musical at his New Jersey concert on Saturday night.

Tidbits 7/23

  • An honest review of the Canandaigua (you have no idea how hard it is to spell that word even after the 340340934th time!) concert from Diane Sprague at Incense and Spices -
Everything is different. Time has gone by and changed things, sometimes slowly but steadily, sometimes abruptly, sometimes in unnoticeable ways. Sometimes things changed so drastically that the past becomes almost a stranger. With a certain amount of reluctance, sadness, and relief, I found that my interest in Clay was slowly waning away. Other music began to interest me and the delight of listening to Clay, though still present, was not as powerful. More and more I set my wonderful collection of his songs aside for something new, something different. I would still return, and look for news about Clay, but found myself watching from a greater distance, with less interest and emotion. In many ways, it has been hard to let go. It's a sad part of life, watching love fade, feeling the excitement slip away, and finding nothing really lasts. Even so, there is some comfort in knowing that time has forced us to move on to something else, whatever that something else might be.

I really didn't know how I would react to the concert. When it started I could not even find Clay. I heard the crowd cheering but could not find him anywhere on the stage. I finally figured out that since everyone else was looking up, I should try that tactic also. It worked. There he was up high walking along the catwalk or whatever that is called. He was smiling, and I really don't know why, but it was magic. The feelings were not totally gone. It was fun again. He slowly worked his way through the crowd and made his way to the stage. His voice was the same voice I remembered. There is something special about hearing him live and letting his voice fill everything inside until all my worries were driven away. The Rochester Philharmonic provided an excellent background, and the shell we were under provided a cozy protection for the incessant rainfall that surrounded us the entire evening.

At the end of the concert, I wanted to hold on to it. I did not want it to end. I loved being immersed in his beautiful voice. I realized I was going to be leaving something I was not totally willing to let go of yet. There is still reasons to pay attention to Clay. In many ways, I have stepped away, but it reminded me that there is something beautiful and wonderful there that I am not ready to leave behind. I stepped out into the rain wondering about Clay's future. Other things have caught my attention, but I am going to still leave a small corner for Clay. It's still a special corner full of beauty and joy.
  • "Idol: The Musical" mentions... I have a feeling Clay will go see this show during his few days off between the NJ and California concerts...
    • New Yorker (just an event listing)
    • Broadway World - "Idol: The Musical" songs hit the internet...
Performances for Idol: The Musical, described as "a satirical new Off-Broadway musical described as "a show based on the worship of Clay Aiken," began Off-Broadway at the 45th Street Theatre (354 W. 45th St.) on Thursday, July 5th.

The show, according to press notes, "is a satirical musical comedy that focuses on the outrageous and delusional fan base of the hit television show. The musical takes place in Steubenville, Ohio where a group of dork-like students are preparing for their high school graduation after which they are determined to drag themselves out of the dregs of the middle-of-nowhere. There are eight of them; all belonging to the same cult-like club that meets daily in a barn that doubles as a shrine to Clay Aiken...The story heats up when the mid-American leg of the 'Idol Tour,' starring Clay Aiken, is announced to be playing Chicago, Memphis, Louisville, Scranton, Charleston, Greensboro, Roanoke and...Steubenville."
  • Concert listings:
    • Detroit Free Press
    • ThisWeek Community Newspapers - write up for the Columbus concert... sorry, we picked it up a little bit late:
What is it about former American Idol runner-up Clay Aiken that gets the girls swooning? Is it his wholesome boy-next-door looks, now more mature and smoldering courtesy of a brunette bowl cut? Is it the lingering effects of his debut CD, Measure of a Man, or his unique reinterpretations of Richard Marx and Celine Dion on A Thousand Different Ways? Perhaps we'll never be able to quantify that certain something that launched Aiken on his 15-plus minutes of fame, but it will make for a good guessing game during Picnic with the Pops this Saturday, where Aiken will perform as a special guest with the Columbus Symphony Orchestra.

Tidbits 7/16

  • Cape Cod Times Online - writer responds to some negative feedback on her "Idol: The Musical"/Clay article with this article about ice cream... huh?
I had no idea what a hornet's nest I would stir up with my little item two weeks ago about the Clay Aiken musical. I got some e-mails, and there were lots of comments on the Times Web site about how wrong I was about Clay. I've thought a lot about how I can redeem myself to all of you Claymates.
  • Some more "Idol: The Musical" mentions:
    • New Yorker Magazine - "A new musical about small-town teen-agers who are obsessed with Clay Aiken. Daniel Tursi directs. In previews."
    • SF Gate - today's cover story (in the print edition) is a American Idol update... includes some info about the musical -
Also included: Joel Selvin's examination of original "Idol" winner Kelly Clarkson's free-falling career and Tommy Nguyen's overview of a New York stage production that revolves around the worship of Season 2 runner-up Clay Aiken.
  • YouTube - someone made a montage of clips from ABC's "The Bachelor" to the tunes of Clay singing "Measure of a Man"... cute!

  • Carolina On My Mind - PA Claymates gearing up for a spectacular night with Clay -
"Three more days ... two more sleeps until July 17!" are some of the salutations and headlines resounding in Philadelphia threads throughout Clay Cyberspace. BOD & HEART actually thought the hoopla was for their birthday, but readers surviving the Houston intermission can read how LAP & LACIE set them straight.

Following a week's hiatus, Clay Aiken's Summer Tour 2007 hits the road again with an 8 p.m. concert Tuesday at the Mann Center for the Performing Arts in Philadelphia.

Tidbits 7/14

Clay and the plane incident is on the Yahoo homepage... but we do have to say - Yahoo, you're a little bit late coming out of the gate... this story was so last week!
The other big airplane scandal of the week surprisingly came from Clay Aiken--arguably one the nicest, squeaky-cleanest contestants in American Idol history, whose greatest faux pas up until now had been daring to sully Kelly Ripa's face with his allegedly unsanitized hand. Well, OK, it wasn't quite as scandalous as R.E.M.'s Peter Buck drunkenly pelting a British Airways attendant with a yogurt carton. But apparently Clay did have the gall to prop his Aiken feet up on a female passenger's armrest, causing the irate woman to give him "a minor shove," according to FBI Special Agent Gary Johnson. Who knows why the FBI had to get involved in this case when they could have been...um, seeking out terrorists, or at least making sure no passengers pack toiletry bottles larger than 3 ounces in their carry-ons. It's a wonder Rosie O'Donnell didn't get involved too, just like she did with that Kelly Ripa incident a few months back. But further intervention probably isn't necessary: "The flight crew was able to resolve the situation," Agent Johnson assured us concerned citizens, letting us all breathe a little easier, knowing our skies are safe from Idol-related personal-space-invasion threats one more. Yep, that's our tax dollars at work, right there...
  • Parade Magazine - POLL ASKS "Who is the best male vocalist ever to have appeared on American Idol?" -- VOTE FOR CLAY... CLICK HERE!
  • S.F. Gate's article about "Idol: The Musical" -
The power of Clay Aiken cannot be underestimated.

There are few other reasons that could explain why a small theater production in Syracuse, N.Y -- a musical about Ohio high school students delusionally devoted to the Season 2 "American Idol" first runner-up -- has stirred national interest.

"I like Clay because he does so much charity work for everyone," said Babs Rubenstein, who plays an evil diva named Adrienne. "You see him as a real person. He wanted to be a teacher, and he still kind of wants to go for that."

But would Aiken enjoy the show?

"I think he would," Rubenstein said. "If someone wrote a show about me, I definitely would want to come see it."

Added Ellis, who has yet to extend a formal invitation to Aiken: "We would absolutely love to have him come see the show."
  • O.C. Register - syndicates the Houston Chronicle article from earlier this month - Clay will be making 4 tour stops in California next month. Questions that didn't "make" this published version of the interview were released earlier this week by the author of the article.

Tidbits 7/13

  • Apparently, RCA has been sending a weird email to some of you. The email, which is itself blank, is titled with the subject "Clay Aiken presale tickets"... But then again, RCA has done stranger things in the past... like putting 1969 instead of 2007 on ClayAiken.com (by the way, that one has STILL not been fixed, 2 months later!) /// UPDATE - some people did get the email - read here.
  • Philly Burbs has an awesome article for Clay's Philadelphia concert, which rolls around on Tuesday -
Clay Aiken has been doing a lot of charity work for UNICEF, but he still manages to tour once or twice each year. Tuesday night, the “American Idol” TV show runner-up will be backed by the Mann Festival Orchestra at the Mann Center for the Performing Arts, 5201 Parkside Ave., Philadelphia, to sing tunes from his mostly-covers album “A Thou-sand Different Ways” and his debut CD “Measure of a Man.”

Among the pop classics that Aiken put on his new CD are Richard Marx's “Right Here Waiting,” Nilsson's “Without You,” Mr. Mister's “Broken Wings” and Elton John's “Sorry Seems to be the Hardest Word.” He has taken some jabs from the press for not recording new material; but so far, the 2006 album has sold well.

Aiken's first CD went multiplatinum behind the hit single “Invisible” and strong Barry Manilow-inspired songs like “No More Sad Songs,” “Shine,” “Perfect Day” and “I Will Carry You.”
  • Philadelphia Daily News/Philly.com also has a nice mention of the concert -
Clay Aiken: One of the biggest success stories from "American Idol" (and he didn't even win!) performs with the lavish Mann Festival Orchestra. Mann Center for the Performing Arts, 52nd and Parkside, 8 p.m. Tuesday, $39-$69, 215-893-1999, www.manncenter.org.
  • Buddy TV - American Idol to start a clothing line ...
The show is also responsible for launching the careers of today’s most popular artists, such as Kelly Clarkson, Carrie Underwood, Clay Aiken, Ruben Studdard and Fantasia Barrino, all of whom have received recognition for their work.
  • NY Post - Idol: The Musical listing ... Clay mention: "A musical about small-town folk who worship pop-star Clay Aiken"
  • SyFy Portal - Jericho...
Every once in a great while, you'll open up SyFy Portal and see us talking about some fan campaign somewhere. It could be efforts to bring closure to "Farscape," or some fleeting attempt to give us more Star Trek, or even Clay Aiken single-handedly saving "Jericho."
  • 411 Mania (warning: coarse language) - article about Al Gore's Live Earth concerts mentions both Gore and Clay were famous runner-ups:
As for Live Earth, the Q'n'D has the HARD numbers on this concert to fight global warming. Was this massive event a success? Has the world's most famous runner-up [Al Gore] (well, second if you count Clay Aiken) saved this climate in crisis?
  • Northwest Herald and Kane County Chronicle are both already listing Clay's Nov. 29 Waukegan, IL Christmas date - "CLAY AIKEN, 7:30 p.m. Nov. 29, Genesee Theatre, 203 N. Genesee St., Waukegan. Tickets: $68-$83."
  • Student Operated Press - talented 14 year old Barry Harris the next Clay Aiken? "Mary Hart: (Entertainment Tonight) 'Could this be the next Clay Aiken?'"

"Idol: The Musical" Photos

The CB's murah15 posted these photos and a review of "Idol: The Musical", the off-broadway musical portraying Clay's fans.
so I dont know that I can rightfully justify what I just saw with this review, but it was one thing I will not forget. I laughed so hard that my friend Lauren and I were crying.

We got there and the place was probably half full.....I would love to find the lyrics to some of the songs because thats what really makes the show. The opening song was the best when they came out and sang lyrics about Clay that were soooooo specific. They were talking about his allergies, his fans and I think you would only really appreciate it if you were a true Clay fan. Thats not to say that you wouldnt laugh if you were there along with someone who was.

Throughout the show they talked some more specifics, calling the kids Claymaniacs and Claymates.....they used the word Claygasm at one point, and in one scene towards the end where one of them said something to someone and one of the kids put his hand over her mouth.....well when she came back with "Im not Kelly Ripa" the place went wild!!!

You could totally tell which people there were Clay fans because they laughed at all the stuff you would only know if you were a fan! Those were the great parts of the show....the inside jokes so to speak!

Here are some pics that I took for you guys......everything else was embedded in the show and you would have had to be there to appreciate.....like the songs "Quakin for Aiken" and "Burnin Hunk of Clay". In that scene the character is singing to a bust head of Clay and saying "Clay youre so naughty" and "Clay you dont know what you do to me with your eyes" Im sure someone did their research on this one!!

Questions That Didn't Make The Houston Chronicle Interview With Clay Are Right Here!

I suppose everyone read the interview by Joey Guerra, who did the Houston Chronicle interview with Clay. But what you haven't seen until today are questions that didn't make the interview printed in the newspaper!

Joey Guerra shared these never-before-seen questions with CDD via email, and here they are for your reading pleasure!

On today's music: ``If it doesn't have a melody or a hook, I really can't get into it. If it's just people screaming, I get confused. It reminds me of my childhood too much.''

``The first preset on my radio is the top 40 station, and I try my best to listen to it. But I find myself switching away and going to the AC station or the country station or the Christian station. There are so few real songs on top 40 anymore. And so few real singers. I'd love to try to find a middle ground between songs that are great, hopefully good singing and production that's current.

``I think nowadays radio doesn't care how good someone sings. They just care whether or not people can fake having sex while standing up dancing to it. That's all they want.

On being roommates with Kimberley Locke: ``She and I became really good friends. I think she was probably a better roommate than I was. I was lazy and kind of messy. She's very meticulous and likes to get her stuff done on time. She would wake up at 6:30 in the morning. By the time she was back from the gym, I was just rolling out of bed, sitting in my pajamas watching TV. She would say, 'Clean up this kitchen! Leaving dirty dishes in the sink.'''

On Idol: The Musical: ``I just heard about it not too long ago. I don't know what to think about it. I think it's kind of flattering, a little bit. Someone put some money into it. They think people are going to show up. I kind of want to see it. That way if they do make fun of me, they'll have to deal with me sitting right there. And then I will boo them loudly.

On his Broadway aspirations: ``When you grow up in N. Carolina, you don't really think about being a pop singer. Maybe you might be a country singer. But when you sing in school, the thing that you do is theater. I never really had any aspirations to do (Broadway). But I'd never really seen a real Broadway play until after I got off of Idol. When I watch them, I'm like, 'Wow - people think I can do this?' I've seen Wicked, and I'm like, 'Whoa!'''

Tidbits 7/6

  • CBS will rebroadcast the first season of Clay's favorite show, Jericho, beginning tonight! Make sure you check your local listings (it's airing at 9 PM in most areas) and tune in.
  • Tour mentions:
    • Tour mention on the the local FOX affiliate in Houston, reports the CB's kleewolf -
This morning FOX news show mention Clay at the Houston Symphony tonight.
And the entertainment reporter said " I did not know he has sold 5 million records?"

Just now they mention him again at News at Noon, saying "Clay with the Houston Symphony tonight at 9:00".
    • NewsOK.com -
TULSA — Former "American Idol” contestant Clay Aiken will perform with the Brady Symphony Orchestra at 8 p.m. Saturday at Brady Theater, 105 W Brady St. For more information, call (918) 582-7239 or go online to www.bradytheater.com.
    • Northwest Herald (Christmas tour mention)
  • Philly Burbs - Katharine McPhee article mentions Clay:
It didn't help that she chose generic dance-pop songs for her self-titled RCA debut CD. With a voice as powerful as hers, she should have gone for greatness as Clay Aiken did with his debut.
  • Pennsylvania Times Leader - "Idol: The Musical" article ...
When “Idol: The Musical” hit the stage in New York, Clay Aiken wasn’t there in person. But there was a bust of Raleigh’s hometown “American Idol” star on stage -- and someone singing “Burnin’ Hunk o’ Clay” to it.
  • TV Squad... interpret what you will from the Houston Chronicle interview, but the folks over at TV Squad and SyFyPortal think Clay has taken credit for saving "Jericho" ... I think it's clear in Clay's blogs that Clay said he was part of the large effort at getting the show back on CBS.
Clay is in Meadowbrook's program for this summer concert season. He will be making a stop at the Gilford, NH venue on July 25, his first time back in Gilford since the 2005 Jukebox Tour.

Thanks to tsunamimommy at the CB for the scan.

  • Carolina On My Mind - fireworks mark tour opener

  • Carolina On My Mind - Clay ready to rock out with Clay as 2007 An Evening with Clay Aiken summer tour kicks off!
If you're not tearing down a Texas highway to Clay Aiken's opening night concert at Frisco Freedom Fest or throwing clothes into a suitcase for the Houston-Tulsa leg of the Summer Symphony Tour, then perhaps you are twiddling your thumbs and watching the clock slowly tick its way towards cellcert time.

The house is white-glove clean, eggs are bedeviled, and the barbeque grill stands ready to serve your Independence Day guests. For sure, the evening will be a juggling act, but you've carefully scheduled patriotic events around the much anticipated first tour concert. The only problem is the hands on your wall clock appear to be standing still or -- worse! -- inching backwards.

Tidbits 7/2

  • Wall Street Journal on who sings the best national anthem -
In the competitive spirit of "American Idol," my son and I starting wondering: Who was the best at singing the national anthem?

Joined now by my wife and 2-year-old daughter, Emma, we went to YouTube and began calling up performances. We watched a number of "Idol" performers take on the anthem -- Kelly Clarkson, Clay Aiken, Fantasia and others. (Follow those links to follow along with us.) Then we branched out to non-"Idol" performers -- Whitney Houston, Mariah Carey, Jessica Simpson, Christina Aguilera, Billy Joel, Justin Timberlake, and, going further back, Marvin Gaye.
  • Even more coverage of "Idol: The Musical". Yes, we know you're tired of it, but at very least it's keeping Clay's name out there:
    • Cape Cod Times -
It's not a joke, folks: "Idol: The Musical," playing off-Broadway, is about fans' obsessive love for Clay Aiken. I don't know whether I was more shocked by the show or that Aiken still has fans. If you're one of those Claymates, you might want to head to NYC to see the show. It starts Thursday at the 45th Street Theatre.
    • Sign On San Diego -
But it's entirely possible that the most frightening phrase in the English language is this: “Based on.”

As in, say: “Idol: A New Musical Based on the Worship of Clay Aiken.”

That's the actual title of a show coming soon to New York, inspired not by TV's “American Idol” nor even by a winner of “American Idol,” but by the gooey affection for a long-ago “Idol” loser.

Nothing against the saintly Mr. Aiken, but lately the entertainment biz has seemed engaged in a competition to see who can contrive the most unlikely, esoteric or plain insane pretext for a movie or play or TV show.
    • The New Yorker -
      IDOL: THE MUSICAL

A new musical about small-town teen-agers who are obsessed with Clay Aiken. Daniel Tursi directs. Previews begin July 5. (45th Street Theatre, 354 W. 45th St. 212-868-4444.)
    • Newsday -
New musical puts Aiken on a pedestal

The real world has its Clay-mates and Clay-nation - fans of 2003 "American Idol" runner-up Clay Aiken. But those guys pale in comparison to the fans in "Idol: The Musical," who recite terms from a "Clay-tionary" while worshipping in front of an 8-foot-high statue of the rosy-cheeked pop singer.

This was bound to happen: "Idol: The Musical," a new tuner based on Aiken worship, begins performances this week at the 45th Street Theatre Off-Broadway (smarttix.com). Among the numbers spread out over two acts: "Quakin' for Aiken" and "Burnin' Hunk of Clay."

  • Taking A Moment tells us how to travel as a Claymate -
Five tips for the savvy Clay traveller:

    1. Book your travel through the cheapest airline you can find. It doesn’t matter if the seats are milk crates or that you have to immunize deported chickens while you’re on there, the more money you can save on airfare, the more you can spend at the “Let’s Buy Clay Another New Car” merchandise booth. I have a favored airline, but I don’t want to seem dismissive of the other cut-rate airlines out there, such as “AeroMaybe” or “Take A Chance” airline, so I won’t mention it by name. Let’s just say that it starts with “Air” and ends with “Tran”. And that’s all I’m going to say about that.

  • Chexxxy's Pearls - Clay Aiken fans aren't the only ones buying multiple copies of their idol's CDs. Kelly Clarkson fans' "Operation Thankful" "exposed"
