Columbus Reviewer "Touched" by Clay's Performance

The Other, an independent newspaper based in Columbus, published an awesome review of Clay's huge (12,000+ in attendance) show in Columbus last week.

And I found myself trying to figure out how I was going to tell the world I didn’t hate the guy—that, indeed, I was somewhat touched by him.
Here's an abbreviated version of the review... thanks to the CB's Buckyeye4Clay for providing the scan and typing it out.
A TRANSCENDENT NIGHT OF PURE POP BEAUTY
Clay Aiken is an utterly convincing singer. Deal With it.

By John Petric

If you haven’t suspected it by now, this ought to confirm it. Yours truly is over the hill.

I liked Clay Aiken.

* * *

So yes, Clay Aiken. He’s a piece of work isn’t he? A cross between John Edwards and Paul McCartney, he mines the emotional veins dug by Streisand, Manilow and Celine, yet without the soul, severe schmaltz or extreme hysteria of those three.

* * *

And yet, let me tell you …..he can sing like a son of a gun. When he isn’t sounding like God’s most precious choirboy, he approaches Luther Vandrossian levels of soul pop.

So the first half of the first half was just that. Even the songs that weren’t about self-affirmation sounded like they were. And then everything suddenly coalesced a few tunes later for what would turn out to be the master stroke. “These Open Arms.”

“What if everything you ever took for granted was gone?” … “And everything you thought was right was wrong?”

Those very questions might be on Michael Vick’s mind right now. But our boy Clay was singing from the fist-sized organ in his chest. He’s no dummy. In fact, I figure him to be quite shrewd. The placing and pacing of “Arms” woke me up and won me over.

Aiken sang those soul-numbing lyrics with every ounce of focused emotional force he could conjure. Every hurt, every slight, every deep yearning to be loved when he wasn’t came out in that song. And let me tell you, we’re talking utterly convincing. I would’ve dabbed his eyes myself if he’d been teary.

* * *

With violins and cellos and violas caressing the melody, Aiken had the force of Oprah’s entire universe behind him. It was pure pop beauty, and I was awestruck by the moment.

Having achieved that level, Aiken returned to it frequently in the second half, but not before he had some fun with golden oldies and whatnot. He had a fine sense of humor, often self-deprecating and a little bit wicked, like when he mentioned the “Chemical Contaminated” grass.

His goofy, well-executed medley (with awesome symphonic accompaniment – mustn’t forget that) included dead-on snippets of Michael Jackson, Madonna, Prince and even “Achy Breaky Heart.”

After “These Open Arms” my favorite song was “Without You” a not-so-minor pop masterpiece. Aiken didn’t quite nail it as perfectly as Harry Nilsson, who was nowhere near the technically accomplished singer Aiken is. But he nailed it nonetheless, in his own patented I-die-for-your-sins-every-night way of performing.

And I found myself trying to figure out how I was going to tell the world I didn’t hate the guy—that, indeed, I was somewhat touched by him.

Tidbits 7/25

  • Extra TV - Rate Clay in the "Rate The Hottest Musicians" poll. When I rated him, 209 people had given him a total rating of 3.46 out of 10. Surely we can bring that up!!....Updated to say that as of 5:25 p.m. CST, Clay is up to 8.20 with 826 votes in. That just within a couple of hours! We know what a hot musician looks like!!
  • MySpace - mjonesy92 - Clayversion story from the huge Columbus concert -
my brother took me to columbus to see clay aiken of all people, ireally dont listen to his music but my brother invited me to go and bought the tickets... it was packed full of people around 8,000 people showed up for this thing.we all looked like sardines out in this field..... but his concert wasnt bad hes pretty funny. and he sings fine, it changed my view toward him...
  • Mercury News - none of the AI6 finalists look like they will be joining the ranks of Clay, Kelly, Carrie, Chris Daughtry -
The concert featured the top 10 finalists - including eventual champ Jordin Sparks and runner-up Blake Lewis - none of whom came across like a sure bet to join the ranks of Kelly Clarkson, Carrie Underwood, Clay Aiken and Chris Daughtry as Idols that have thrived musically outside the show's umbrella.
  • Broadway World interviews "Idol: The Musical" director -
Based on the "American Idol" fanbase, the musical is a satire of the worship of recent "Idol" runner-up, Clay Aiken. It takes place in a small town in Ohio, where a group of quirky high school students who belong to a club in which they worship a shrine to Clay are getting ready for their graduation. Recently produced in Syracuse, the show is now running Off Broadway at the 45th Street Theater, and began previews July 5th.

2500 Fans Wait For Clay By Bus at Columbus Concert

As most of you have heard, there were 12,000 to 14,000 people who attended the concert at the Chemical Abstract Service venue in Columbus, Ohio on Saturday, July 21. What I'd give to see a picture of that crowd! The cheering must have been overwhelming!!

But even more unbelievable is the fact that 2500 fans waited for Clay at the bus after the concert. 2500!! Now with a crowd that big, you'd think that they would decide not to send Clay out there to try to greet everyone. Not so.

The Clayboard has a thread which tells some really neat things that happened at the bus that night. Below are some I'd like to share with you. Have your tissues ready for a couple of them.

Imclaymed tells us,

"I was standing a few feet from the bus behind a grey car when Jerome came out, saw us and said, "My goodness, there's a lot of y'all. Any suggestions of what we do?" When he decided on the single file line, which went all over the place, I ended up being about 15 people from the far end of the line. I thought I was never gonna get to the end! However, getting there put me near the parking lot, just a hop and a skip from our parked car.

I figured Clay would only lightly brush some of our hands as he passed by, but we all got a firm grip...and a "Thank you for coming". What a gracious man!!!!"
The aerial map above shows the approximate length of the line of fans. Can any of you imagine any other star lining up 2500 of their fans single file and shaking hands with all of them? What an amazing person Clay is!

Mom4clay22 tells a story that brought tears to my eyes,
"That was a magical night!

My 8 year old daughter got her first handsqueeze. She was so nervous he wouldn't see her. But he paused when he did and said "Thank ya hun!" She has been on ever since. My hubby (who doesn't get "it") was impressed." Not only did Clay make a little girl's dream come true, but he impressed a husband who, like many men, don't "get it"!
Now this next story is a several tissue one. DigginClay tells us this one,
"Nicki503 posted this in the Columbus recap thread. It's so beautiful, I thought more people might see it here. I hope you don't mind nicki!

There was only one low light with regard to the handshake line that I would like to comment on if I may. That low light, however, turned out to be a real highlight for me and for my two friends. I kept looking back at a van in the parking lot. There was a girl there in a wheelchair seemingly content to just watch the line and watch Clay go by. I mentioned to my friends that maybe we should see if we could get Clay to look her way and wave at her. Well, one of my friends had a better idea. She waltzed right back to her to ask if she would like to join us in line. Oh did she ever want to do that. The person with her was hesitant about that but my friend insisted. I found out later that apparently she had wanted to be with some fellow fans in line but that they did not want her in line with them for reasons I do not know. So she joined us in line. Then came Clay and the real highlight of my evening. As Clay and Jerome approached I could see they were looking up, straight-ahead and of course moving very fast. Well, this girl in the wheelchair as about my waist level. I feared Clay would not see her so as he approached us I started loudly saying, “Look down!” And, I also pointed down to her. It worked, Clay then saw her and leaned way over and took her hands with both of his! It was quick but she was thrilled beyond belief. Because of that I actually missed my handshake but I did touch his arm. I have to say that I did not mind at all because it was such a good feeling to see how thrilled this girl was that she was actually in line and that Clay shook her hands! Those who did not want her in line with them missed one of the most heartwarming moments of the evening. The look on Clay’s face and on her’s was absolutely priceless. I am not condemning anyone, as I don’t know the full story as to why she was not in line with her friends. I just wanted to mention what they missed by not having her with them in that line. I can get a handshake at another concert. I would not have traded that moment for anything."
How special for Clay to do this for all 2500 fans. And how great are the fans for being so good about staying organized and waiting quietly until Clay came by to shake their hands. I've said it before, but I'll say it again, Clay and his fans are the greatest!

New Columbus Photos from toni7babe

The CB's toni7babe posted a batch of new photos from the Columbus concert onto SmugMug. These photos were not easy to take, as the clack police was out in full force. toni7babe says she was "caught" before Clay sang "Lover All Alone" and was moved to the lawn area for the last 2 songs. Don't they realize how important fresh clack is to the Clay nation? ;)
Thank you all for your kind words. I don't post much here but I am overwhelmed at all the kind remarks and PM's. Thank you!

My seats were not very close and somewhat to the side but we had a nice Clack House table and it was fun..I watched the jumbotron a lot last night ...and evidently many were watching me *g*.

As you know the camera police were out in full force. I was able to catch some video and pics in the first half but in the 2nd half after being warned not to take video and I know others were also I tried to take a few pics during Sexy Back and boom they came and got me during Angela's solo. MY OWN FAULT...sorta new to this all....but I know now I should have not started again after being warned...or at least not till the last song *g*. So my own fault! But it happens to many who take pics and video ...probably wont be the last either for me I am sure.

Anyways, they were fairly polite to me but very stern at the same time and took me behind the stage and met with a Columbus police officer..and basically they said you can keep your camera etc but you will now watch the rest of the show from the lawn where you will not be tempted to take video and pictures....and they escorted me there. As they left I was told if I take 2 steps closer than where I was I would be escorted off OUCH!!

So I watched Lover All Alone and Because You Loved Me sitting on the grass. I was shaken up and crying ...it just had all unnerved me a bit......so after it was over I just got in my car and left and did not even try to go to the buses. I went to meet some CH'ers at a post get together we were having.

But that being said I had a wonderful time...and Like I said it was my own fault..after being warned I should not of started taking pics even though I waited along time and didn't do video in the 2nd half....I just knew no one was getting much and wanted to bring some stuff back for us all..

  • An honest review of the Canandaigua (you have no idea how hard it is to spell that word even after the 340340934th time!) concert from Diane Sprague at Incense and Spices -
Everything is different. Time has gone by and changed things, sometimes slowly but steadily, sometimes abruptly, sometimes in unnoticeable ways. Sometimes things changed so drastically that the past becomes almost a stranger. With a certain amount of reluctance, sadness, and relief, I found that my interest in Clay was slowly waning away. Other music began to interest me and the delight of listening to Clay, though still present, was not as powerful. More and more I set my wonderful collection of his songs aside for something new, something different. I would still return, and look for news about Clay, but found myself watching from a greater distance, with less interest and emotion. In many ways, it has been hard to let go. It's a sad part of life, watching love fade, feeling the excitement slip away, and finding nothing really lasts. Even so, there is some comfort in knowing that time has forced us to move on to something else, whatever that something else might be.

I really didn't know how I would react to the concert. When it started I could not even find Clay. I heard the crowd cheering but could not find him anywhere on the stage. I finally figured out that since everyone else was looking up, I should try that tactic also. It worked. There he was up high walking along the catwalk or whatever that is called. He was smiling, and I really don't know why, but it was magic. The feelings were not totally gone. It was fun again. He slowly worked his way through the crowd and made his way to the stage. His voice was the same voice I remembered. There is something special about hearing him live and letting his voice fill everything inside until all my worries were driven away. The Rochester Philharmonic provided an excellent background, and the shell we were under provided a cozy protection for the incessant rainfall that surrounded us the entire evening.

At the end of the concert, I wanted to hold on to it. I did not want it to end. I loved being immersed in his beautiful voice. I realized I was going to be leaving something I was not totally willing to let go of yet. There is still reasons to pay attention to Clay. In many ways, I have stepped away, but it reminded me that there is something beautiful and wonderful there that I am not ready to leave behind. I stepped out into the rain wondering about Clay's future. Other things have caught my attention, but I am going to still leave a small corner for Clay. It's still a special corner full of beauty and joy.
  • "Idol: The Musical" mentions... I have a feeling Clay will go see this show during his few days off between the NJ and California concerts...
    • New Yorker (just an event listing)
    • Broadway World - "Idol: The Musical" songs hit the internet...
Performances for Idol: The Musical, described as "a satirical new Off-Broadway musical described as "a show based on the worship of Clay Aiken," began Off-Broadway at the 45th Street Theatre (354 W. 45th St.) on Thursday, July 5th.

The show, according to press notes, "is a satirical musical comedy that focuses on the outrageous and delusional fan base of the hit television show. The musical takes place in Steubenville, Ohio where a group of dork-like students are preparing for their high school graduation after which they are determined to drag themselves out of the dregs of the middle-of-nowhere. There are eight of them; all belonging to the same cult-like club that meets daily in a barn that doubles as a shrine to Clay Aiken...The story heats up when the mid-American leg of the 'Idol Tour,' starring Clay Aiken, is announced to be playing Chicago, Memphis, Louisville, Scranton, Charleston, Greensboro, Roanoke and...Steubenville."
  • Concert listings:
    • Detroit Free Press
    • ThisWeek Community Newspapers - write up for the Columbus concert... sorry, we picked it up a little bit late:
What is it about former American Idol runner-up Clay Aiken that gets the girls swooning? Is it his wholesome boy-next-door looks, now more mature and smoldering courtesy of a brunette bowl cut? Is it the lingering effects of his debut CD, Measure of a Man, or his unique reinterpretations of Richard Marx and Celine Dion on A Thousand Different Ways? Perhaps we'll never be able to quantify that certain something that launched Aiken on his 15-plus minutes of fame, but it will make for a good guessing game during Picnic with the Pops this Saturday, where Aiken will perform as a special guest with the Columbus Symphony Orchestra.

Male Concertgoer: Columbus Show the "Coolest Concert I Have Ever Been To"

Who says men don't enjoy Clay's musical stylings? Danny Knepshield, a 38 year old male, attended Clay's show in Columbus last night and described it (through a post on his MySpace blog) as the "coolest concert" he's ever been to.

Clay was himself surprised by the large number of men who attended the show; he joked: "We have more gentlemen in the audience than we usually have. Either the women in Columbus are strong-willed, or the alcohol tab is very high for the men here."

First of all, I have been to many concerts in my day. I have seen Run DMC, Public Enemy, Big Daddy Kane, EPMD, the Beastie Boys, Technotronic, Tone Loc, Ice T, NWA, Biz Markie, Whodini, Tech N9ne and many others. On the rock side, I have seen Duran Duran, Tom Petty, Fleetwood Mac, Queensryche, Dream Theater and probably some others that I have forgotten.

I have pretty much enjoyed, to a greater or lesser degree, every concert that I have been to. The thing is...nothing exciting really happened at any of them. That changed last night.

Last night I took my wife to see Clay Aiken down in Columbus. I was looking forward to spending the night with my wife and seeing her happy at being able to see her idol (no pun intended). I must admit that I wasn't all that hyped at the thought of seeing the show. Now, don't get me wrong, it isn't that I didn't want to go, it's just that I wasn't enthusiastic about it. I actually think Clay is a great singer, but he isn't really my cup of tea. My wife, however, was very excited about going.

Clay came out to perform, right on time, at 8:15. He started to sing some of his regular fare and I was thinking it was sorta boring. After a couple of songs, he took a break from singing and started talking and making jokes. He joked with the crowd and made fun of the venue and I started to really get into it. He was very funny and extremely likable. No wonder my wife likes him. Anyway, I began to really get into the show at that point and I was very glad I went. Later, he made fun of himself for "not being cool enough" and playfully attempted to remedy it by singing covers of Baby Got Back, Bringing Sexy Back and, believe it or not...You Down with OPP! If you weren't there, it might sound corny, but it wasn't. It was done to be funny and it was very entertaining. He also has one hell of a voice.

After the show, Lynda and I went over to wait by the tour bus. We were simply hoping to catch a glimpse of him before he left. We had no idea what we were in for.

We found out that Clay actually likes to personally meet the fans that take the time to wait for him after his shows. What other major artist does that? The problem is that there were a lot of fans waiting for him. Apparently, a lot more than they are accustomed to dealing with. The security guards spent nearly thirty minutes discussing the logistics of the problem of how to arrange it to allow so many people to meet Clay in person. They finally had the entire crowd of remaining fans (about 2,500 people) line up single-file around the entire facility. We were lined up through the parking lots, sidewalks, lawn...everywhere! I had never seen anything like it before. All done just to make his fans happy. Wow! This alone was one of the coolest things I have ever witnessed. Please tell me one other artist to do such a thing for so many people?

Clay finally arrived, about an hour later, at the front of the line and proceeded to walk down the line of fans and shook every single person's hand. Lynda not only got to see and hear her favorite performer, but she got to shake his hand too. My wife was so happy you should have seen the look on her face. That was the coolest thing that ever happened at any concert I have been to!
Clayversity's laughnoutloud also posted this cute story from the concert:
At intermission I ran as fast as a gimp leg and big butt would allow to the line of porta potties...and believe me, there was a line!! But it moved fast. (those toilet guys know how to move a crowd, I'm telling ya!) Anyhow, while standing in line this complete stranger dude...late 20s-30 yr old- in front of me turns and says, 'Man, this is a great show isn't it?' I smile and say, 'yep.' He says, 'That guy is an entertainer! I always thought he had the best voice. My wife made me go to the American Idol show when it was here, but I haven't seen him since. This guy is great!!' He was just so excited and animated and he wanted to talk about the show. Hee. The man was Clay gushing right in front of me.

Columbus Crowd Estimated at 12,000 to 14,000

Columbus welcomed Clay with open arms! Venue staff estimated the crowd at the Chemical Abstract Service to be around 12,000 to 14,000. WOW!

The Columbus Dispatch gave the concert a thumbs up in their review:

Aiken, the American Idol runner-up turned adult-pop star, headlined the Columbus Symphony Orchestra's Picnic with the Pops program last night.

His audience is mostly women; his singing is polished, and his attitude is upbeat. He exudes sincerity and earnestness, but, like so many pop singers, he lacks compelling originality.

One of Aiken's endearing traits is his gently self-depreciating humor.

"We have more gentlemen in the audience than we usually have," he observed. "Either the women in Columbus are strong-willed, or the alcohol tab is very high for the men here."

Aiken's strongest moment was his performance of Lover All Alone, for which he wrote the lyrics.
