Clay County Fair Underway
The Clay County Fair in Spencer, Iowa, is in full swing. Organizers call it one of the greatest counties fairs there is.
The 87th Clay County Fair has something for everyone -- from hayrides to thrill rides.
It's why organizers call it one of the greatest county fairs in the world, but it hasn't always been that way.
The history of the fair dates back to 1918. Ever since, organizers have tried to make each year bigger and better.
Fair manager, Phil Hurst, says it's the big-name performers that have come to the fair, that have really put it on the map.
Past performers include Johnny Cash, Willie Nelson and Clay Aiken. Perhaps the biggest name to pass through the fair, Bob Hope in 1975.
“We are the biggest county or state fair when it comes to ag and ag-business in the nation," says Hurst.
This year's fair has over 600 commercial exhibits and the attendance is expected to top 300,000 -- living up to the theme, “Greatest and More in 2004.”
The fair runs through next Sunday.
