It hasn't been a great past 140 years for Southerners. We started out by losing the Civil War, then white Southerners spent a good century trying to keep black Southerners from being equal, had a president shot in one Southern state and a civil rights leader shot in another, elected Jesse Helms and rounded out the ignominy by producing Clay Aiken and Ruben Studdard.
