Aiken Debuts 'Lost' Song at 'Aladdin' Screening

By Mike Szymanski

LOS ANGELES (Zap2it.com) -- Clay Aiken didn't stay home to watch the presidential debates Thursday night (Sept. 30), but instead sang at a special "Aladdin" screening in Hollywood.

The second "American Idol" runner-up sang a "lost" song, "Proud of Your Boy," before the first all-digital screening of the 1992 animated film. The song will be featured on the "Aladdin Special Edition" DVD to be released by Disney on Tuesday, Oct. 5.

"Clay Aiken is the best person to sing this lost song, he's got a fantastic voice," says Alan Menken, who won the Oscars for "Aladdin's" music (best original score and best song for "A Whole New World) and co-wrote "Proud of Your Boy" with Tim Rice. "This was a song that was cut because of the way the story changed, and I think it's one of the most beautiful ballads we ever did."

Aiken's song was originally planned to be performed in a scene with Aladdin's mother, a character who was dropped during the script re-writes.

Aiken was on hand at the premiere and after party to accept a $50,000 check for his Bubel-Aiken Foundation www.thebubelaikenfoundation.org which helps children with disabilities.

The premiere was held at the historic El Capitan Theatre in Hollywood with about 300 special guests walking down a blue carpet and meeting the movie's characters outside the theater. At a party afterward, Aiken talked to fans, signed autographs and posed for pictures while kids rode motorized camels, made decorative fez hats and created magic carpets of their own.

The "Aladdin" DVD release also includes Jessica Simpson and Nick Lachey performing "A Whole New World" and includes corrections and enhancements to more than 100 scenes in the film.
