Record mogul Clive Davis returns to 'Idol'

Associated Press

NEW YORK - Record mogul Clive Davis is returning to "American Idol" to give his expert opinion on this year's remaining finalists.

Davis, who gushed over Fantasia last year before she was crowned champ, will appear on the Fox show Tuesday, a week before the season finale.

Davis, who heads the U.S. division of the BMG music conglomerate, has guided the debut albums of each of the "Idol" winners and that of runner-up Clay Aiken. Each of their albums has sold more than 1 million copies.

In a statement to The Associated Press, Davis - who launched the careers of Alicia Keys and Whitney Houston, among others - said he was excited to return to the talent competition.

"'American Idol' has confounded skeptics and unexpectedly given me special artists to collaborate with," he said Thursday. "I will be looking at this year's semifinalists with a sharp eye, hoping our amazing streak can continue."

The remaining "Idol" contestants are Bo Bice of Helena, Ala.; Vonzell Solomon of Fort Myers, Fla.; and Carrie Underwood of Checotah, Okla.

Anthony Federov was booted off the show Wednesday evening.

Clay at ASCAP Awards

From MTV
Usher will present Jermaine Dupri with the Golden Note Award at the ASCAP Pop Music Awards on Monday in Beverly Hills. #1
Tom Vickers, an independent recording industry consultant, says Idol was in perfect pitch through the revamped semifinals but has fallen flat in the finals."The final four has gotten weaker as the show has progressed," Vickers says. "I still think the first and second years' final four were stronger than this year and last year."Vickers has doubts that any of the singers can enjoy the professional success of earlier Idols Kelly Clarkson, Ruben Studdard and Fantasia Barrino or second-season runner-up Clay Aiken.

#2
Brittany Richardson, 14, another Temecula resident also waiting to get into Idol, explained why one singer's — or perhaps a judge's — problems don't affect most fans' interest in the show."When you find somebody you like and who you're voting for, you kind of look past what all the other people are doing," she says. In Season 2, which the group of waiting fans said was the best, "Corey being arrested didn't change the fact that we were voting for Clay."
